The first site that I explored is Michigan Career Development. Reading through the site, I
was drawn to pages 10-12, Upper Elementary. I was drawn to this section because, in my
concentration for teaching, I will be in grades 3-6 so I felt as though this was most interesting in
this course, we have mostly gone over high school students and their transition plan so I felt this
would be the most beneficial to me and my knowledge. There were many things that I have
gathered from these pages and the first thing I noticed about this certain chapter is that there are
four targets in this career awareness. The first target is the career zones, the main points from this
was first a letter sent out to parents explaining in detail about introducing the process of career
awareness for grades 4-6. Next are field trips that are involved in career awareness visiting a
library and having an assignment, book fairs, and book reports. Next which is very important is
family STEM, engineering, health, and public safety. This was very interesting and nice to see
because this is very important and will definitely help these students with learning and
experiencing while being hands-on. Target two goes over career zones that use academic subject
matter. They embed career awareness activities in core curriculums through career-focused
education. Also, they use college and community-based programs for example Math Corps. Next
with target three. In this target, it includes character-building activities that help figure out a
student’s strengths and weaknesses as well as their values. This also includes building soft skills
and having work ethic discussions. Next is target four, in this target it is about out-of-school time
and family engagement. This includes family support groups, developing job skills,
career-focused summer camps, and school and community-based programs. Many positives
come from these targets for example building skills that are needed out of school and in the
workplace, experiencing and learning about different jobs, hands-on activities, and lastly
discovering their strengths and weaknesses early on so they can work on them and succeed. In
this, I honestly did not find any limitations, I feel as though there are only positives that are
included. This information is very helpful and applied to working with students who have special
needs because with all of these positives for learning and exploring the work field is very
important and is only beneficial to them it is great that it includes field trips and hands-on
activities so they can build their knowledge on after school and graduation, what they wanna do
in life, and building their skills. I could utilize this in the future by introducing this with a school
or class that I would be working with and this will help students build the great skills they will
need and set them up for success early on.
The two assessments I have picked for this site, “Employment assessments” are Career
Builder and Career Interest Inventory. These two assessments were drawn to me because I feel as
though these are very crucial and beneficial for students with special needs. Having
career-building is essential for students in high school for them to learn about different careers
and how to get there while career interest inventory is also very important because students get to
learn what jobs best suit and are most common for them. First, with career building, this website
is considered a friendly platform that allows users to search for jobs, and opportunities, create
resumes, and receive job alerts. This has many positives because it allows students to explore
careers and the website allows them to research and see a variety of jobs that they may be
interested in. Limitations I do see with this is some students with special needs may find it hard
to use and utilize this website though it is very helpful, it may be difficult to use and understand.
With this information, I believe this would be a great resource to use with students with special
needs allowing them the opportunity to explore and learn about different jobs. I could utilize this
website in the classroom by going over and explaining the website to my students and helping
