Running head: MODULE 9.2 – WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 1 Module 9.2 – Written Assignment – Air Transportation Quality Requirements (Cargo Loading and Unloading) Paul Irizarry BSAB 410 June 11, 2023
MODULE 9.2 – WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 2 1. Introduction and name of the specific area Air cargo loading and unloading are critical processes in the transportation of goods through airfreight (IATA, 2022). These processes play a vital role in ensuring the efficient and safe movement of cargo between aircraft and the ground, this requires following specific quality requirements that govern air cargo loading and unloading operations. This paper will describe air cargo loading and unloading specifically the quality requirements with which it is associated. Next, we will review the potential defects that can be observed in loading and unloading of air cargo and how those defects can be prevented. Finally, we will investigate how performance can be measured to verify lasting corrective actions and explain where air cargo loading and unloading fits into the Balance Scorecard elements. 2. Describe the specific area (e.g. cargo loading and unloading) Air cargo loading and unloading is the process of transferring goods between aircraft and cargo terminals, ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of cargo via airfreight (IATA, 2022). This entire loading and unloading process involves a series of activities, including the handling, sorting, storage, and documentation of cargo (Drljača, Štimac, Vidović, & Petar, 2020). During the air cargo loading process, the cargo is carefully loaded into the aircraft in a way that maximizes the space and evens the weight out across the aircraft to ensure stability during flight. On the other side, unloading involves removing the cargo from the aircraft using specialized equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or conveyor systems (Drljača, Štimac, Vidović, & Petar, 2020). The loading and unloading of cargo is governed by various regulations and guidelines that were created by organizations like the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) (IATA, 2022).
MODULE 9.2 – WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 3 These guidelines ensure that safety protocols, proper documentation, and accurate labeling are used throughout the process ensuring the cargo remains protected. 3. Describe the quality requirements associated with that area. The quality requirements associated with air cargo loading and unloading include safety, compliance, accuracy of documentation, and cargo integrity (Drljača, Štimac, Vidović, & Petar, 2020). Safety is one of, if not the most important part of, air cargo operations, which is why quality requirements involve following the safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents, injuries, and damage to cargo or aircraft (IATA, 2020). Compliance with regulatory requirements is essential to ensure that all necessary rules, regulations, and standards set by aviation authorities, such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), are met (IATA, 2022). It is critical that accurate documentation is available for the proper identification, tracking, and handling of cargo (Johnson, 2019). Quality requirements require that labeling, packaging, and documentation be performed to prevent errors and ensure the correct handling of cargo (Drljača, Štimac, Vidović, & Petar, 2020). Lastly, quality requirements involve protecting the integrity of the cargo throughout the loading and unloading process, including preventing damage, loss, theft, or contamination of the cargo (Drljača, Štimac, Vidović, & Petar, 2020). 4. What quality defects do you believe can be present or observed? Quality defects that can be observed in air cargo loading and unloading include damaged packaging, mishandling of fragile items, incorrect documentation, and improper weight distribution (IATA, 2020). Cargo packaging can be damaged during handling, leading to torn or
