HP 412 Writing Assignment 2
BU is a diverse and ever-changing community that has become my second home during
these last 3 years. The BU community offers a lot of opportunities and resources that support my
mental health. Firstly, according to the World Health Organization, mental health is determined
by socioeconomic, biological, and environmental factors. I feel that the community around me is
incredibly supportive in terms of the environmental factors. The faculty and students are
generally always friendly and everyone wants to make college a positive experience and be
productive throughout their 4 years. BU has many organizations that support mental health like
BU Wellbeing and Active Minds which aim to educate and provide valuable behavioral; health
resources to students across campus. As a physical therapy major, I am also part of the Sargent
community as well as the DPT community. We are a smaller college in BU but in my opinion, it
makes learning and interactions more personal and allows me to feel more connected with
others. This community has allowed me to foster healthy relationships and friendships with other
bright individuals that push me to be a better version of myself and I hope I do the same, like a
symbiotic relationship. The BU community is diverse and there are so many ways to engage your
interests with other people. For me personally, I love swimming and playing volleyball with my
friends every week during open gym and then getting dinner afterward. Being able to find others
with similar interests allows me to have an outlet for my stress and also develop my
hobbies/skills. For instance, this semester I started living in an apartment and I have been
cooking for a lot of my friends!
Some factors that detract from good overall mental wellness include the main stressors of
college which is academics. Growing up in an Asian household, there were more traditional

thoughts about success and my parents pushed my sister and me academically. The same
continued in college but the stress to do well in school was mainly self-mediated and I just
wanted to do the best I could. Of course, finals are always stressful for everyone and this stress
can elevate our stress hormones such as cortisol and BU is a rigorous school. I personally never
dealt with discrimination or racism here at BU but I have some friends who tell me that they
have been treated unfairly due to their race on campus so that could also be another factor that
causes mental health to decline. Another main factor that affects my mental health is the
financial burden of college and always worrying about how expensive college is. As we talked
about in class and with Dr. Hutchinson’s lecture, mental health has a negative stigma and a lot of
college students are fearful of mental disorders and choose not to speak up. Social media and
societal norms have caused mental health to be neglected at times and this only exacerbates the
damage and negative impact it can have on students. Dr. Hutchinson even gave an example of
how schools were discriminatory toward students with mental health issues as Yale required
students who took a leave of absence due to mental health to reapply or else they weren’t
allowed to return. Dr. Hutchinson also touched on how we should use person-first language, to
make the person with the disability still feel like a part of a community and not to diminish any
of their accomplishments. Overall, while I feel like BU can be a stressful environment, there are
many resources and classes like HP 412 that educate us on what mental health is and how we can
improve it for ourselves and others around us.
To promote better mental health we need to speak up and not be complicit when we or
someone we love is dealing with a disorder. Furthermore, Dr. Hutchinson described recovery to
be multi-faceted as there are many ways we can influence recovery which includes work, peer
