ATEGORIZING SOUPS AND IDENTIFYING VARIABLES
The initial task involves categorizing a list of forty dishes as either soup or not
soup. Through examination, dishes such as Borscht, Chicken broth, Chicken
noodle soup, Clam chowder, Consommé, Corn chowder, French onion soup in a
bread bowl, Gazpacho, Menudo, Miso soup, Oatmeal, Pho, Tomato bisque, and
Vichyssoise are classified as soups. They share common features such as having a
liquid base, often being served hot (with the notable exception of Gazpacho), and
typically consumed with a spoon from a bowl. In contrast, items like Baked
beans, Cereal with milk, Chicken pot pie, Chocolate pudding, Coconut milk,
Crème brûlée, Fruit salad in syrup, Guacamole, and others do not meet these
criteria and are thus categorized as not soup.

EARNING
Incremental concept learning involves refining our understanding of a concept as
we encounter more examples.
The model starts with a basic definition of soup, including characteristics like
having a liquid base, having mixed ingredients in base, being served in a bowl
with a spoon, and often being savory.
Positive Examples:
●
Borscht: Adheres to all initial criteria for being a soup.
●
Chicken noodle soup: Reinforces the criteria and adds that soups can be
savory and often include solids like noodles or vegetables.
●
Consommé: A clear soup that emphasizes the importance of a liquid base
and being served hot.
Negative Examples:
●
Cereal with milk: Although it has a liquid base and is served in a bowl
with a spoon, it is not boiled or savory, distinguishing it from soup.
●
Chocolate pudding: It's served in a bowl and might be spooned but lacks
a liquid base, is not boiled, and is sweet, separating it from the soup
category.
●
Coconut milk: While it has a liquid base, it is not boiled, served with
solids, or necessarily savory, distinguishing it from soups.
I used an iterative approach to further adjust the model through specialization
and
generalization.
With

and

example,
the
model
specializes by adding characteristics specific to soups, such as having mixed
ingredients and is always served hot, or generalizes by clarifying what soups are
not, based on the absence of certain features (e.g., all dishes in a solid state are
soups).
The inclusion of Gazpacho as a cold soup challenges the model to accommodate
soups served at various temperatures, especially code, indicating the flexibility
required in our understanding of what constitutes a soup.
The heuristics employed in this process involved specializing the model to
include criteria like being primarily liquid and savory, and generalizing it to

exclude dishes not served in a bowl intended for soup consumption or lacking a
liquid base.

model's adaptability and the importance of flexible criteria in the conceptual
understanding of soups.

LASSIFICATION
5 Parameters for Soup Classification.

Is Always Served Hot
Abstracted Classification Tree Definition. A dish can be considered a soup if it
meets the following criteria:
●
Must have a liquid base.
●
Is typically served with a bowl and spoon.
●
Is often savory, although there are exceptions (e.g., sweet soups like some
Asian desserts).
●
A dish can be considered a soup if it meets the following criteria:
●
Must have a liquid base.
●
The criteria of being boiled and always served hot can be flexible, as seen
with cold soups like Gazpacho or dishes that are prepared by boiling but
not served hot.
Using the tree, we can classify dishes like Gazpacho, Miso Soup, and Tomato
Bisque as soups, while dishes like Cereal with milk, Chocolate pudding, and
Coconut milk would not be classified as soups.
