Recitation 12 Assignment – Matthew Cheung Section 1 1. Write a poster title that summarizes the main findings. Observing the Variation in Carbon Sequestration between different Tree Genus Using Linear Modeling 2. What is the main question of your research and why it was a compelling or interesting from a scientific point of view? The main question of our research was to determine the differences in carbon sequestration for different tree species based on diameter as well as determine how far off each calculation of carbon sequestration is off the baseline oak tree model. 3. What is the main objective of your study? To compare carbon sequestration levels of different tree species based on tree diameter and compare the fit of the model of carbon sequestration calculations made by the researchers for species other than Oak trees. 4. Describe (a flow chart is fine) the most essential methods for addressing that objective and understanding the results. Perform linear regressions predicting biomass for each species using diameter as a predictor Plot and interpret results Re-run multivariate linear regressions w/ diameter and height as predictors of carbon sequestration and compare adjusted r- squared values to Oak tree model (which has been established as the base of the model) 5. Sketch a graph, with labeled axes and a legend, that best illustrates the evidence.
6. What is the 'take-home' message from that piece of evidence? How does this address your main question? The relationship between tree diameter and biomass is not perfectly linear, meaning that there is variation in the relationship between the two and the model assumptions made by the researchers in predicting carbon sequestration are not completely accurate.
