For this assignment I chose a visualization from “The Big Book of Dashboards”. The visualization was in Chapter 30 and part of the “Make the Demographics Dashboard Personal”. I really like the interactive visuals that people are able to create with their data. I believe that by making your presentation interactive it will reach a wider audience, especially when paired with eye catching colors and an interesting subject. This particular visual illustrates the global warming trend in degrees Celcius based on data ranging from the 1850’ to the 2010’s by 10 year increments. The visualization implements the categorical color technique. The lowest increase in degrees is displayed in teal while the highest increase is displayed as an orange, with increments in between shifting in shades of white, yellow and pale orange to illustrate the rise in heat. These colors help the audience see at a glance how each data point measures against the others based on its color alone. There is also a small pictorial of a globe under the decade that’s size is dependent on the
warming trend of those years. This can be seen by the slightly larger 1870’s globe than the 1880’s, the point on the line graph indicates that there was a strong El Nino event during the years 1877-78. It is also made evident by the small globes of 1890’s and 1910’s and the tiny dot of a globe for the decade of 1900 when the whole world experienced record lows due to volcanic events. Now this visual is just a picture so I’m not able to exact how interactive it might be, but there is a note “Hover over globe” at the top that infers some sort of action. I am assuming that by hovering over the globe that either the data on the graph corresponding to that time is highlighted or that perhaps important data points or “spikes” are pointed out and explained on what type of event caused a spike or drop in climate.
This visualization would be effective in illustrating a trend over an extended time frame with many data points. As you can see if was useful in tracking the warming trend in Earth’s rising temperature, it could also be used to show the something like birth rates to death rates per decade indicating any spiking events or fauna fluctuations over the last century. It could even be used to illustrate an organization’s spending with interactive tabs for each major buy and why it was required or drops and why they occurred. This visualization creates understanding for stakeholders who may not be familiar with data analysis by simplifying complex information. This visualization’s data set spans over 160 years and instead of showing the stakeholders 160 years’ worth of numbers that they possibly not understand, it has been simplified into something that can be understood within the first glance. Also, due to it being interactive I assume that if someone were to want to dig into the data a little deeper that hovering over the globes or data points on the line will give them the information that they were looking for. It is because of this interactive feature and the color shifting graph that this visualization also succeeds into providing contextual representation, facilitating comparison, and relevance. By seeing patterns and trends, stakeholders can quickly identify important areas that require attention or further insight. It is also known that interactive visualizations encourage stakeholders to explore the data at their leisure. They are able to interact with specific elements and gain deeper insights of the data which will enhance their understanding of the data as a whole.
