EES-152, Ecology Week 7. Engagement and Application Topics: Population structure, distribution, and genetics Quantitative skills: comparing two groups with a t-test For all assignments in this course: All charts/diagrams/figures must be made using excel or a similar program ( not hand drawn ). All axes must be labeled (including units) and a figure caption must be associated with any required chart/diagram/figure. Quantitative work may be shown either digitally or by doing it by hand and then inserting a photograph of your work into your document. One pdf file containing all answers, figures, etc. should be submitted. Do not submit multiple files or a file in different format. If you need assistance with any of this reach out to the TA. SHOW ALL WORK. 1. The managers of a small lake are considering allowing limited fishing for bluegill sunfish. However, before deciding how much fishing to allow, the owners would like to estimate the size of the bluegill population. They capture, mark, and release 80 bluegills. Several weeks later they use the same methods to capture 220 bluegills, 38 of which were marked. Estimate the population size of bluegill in the lake. Show your work. What are three assumptions of your estimate? 2. The managers of large preserve in the previous question have asked for a follow-up study to better understand the effects of different fishing regulations on the bluegill population size across a number of lakes. They decide to use mark and recapture methods to determine bluegill population sizes in lakes where fishing has been regulated differently. The lakes are all nearly identical in characteristics (e.g., size, water chemistry, etc.) except that 20 lakes have had no fishing restrictions for the past decade (Group 1) and 20 other lakes have allowed fishing with only artificial lures (Group 2) for the same time period. The managers made mark-and-recapture based estimates of the bluegill population sizes in each lake, and the data are shown in the table. The managers send you the dataset and ask you to interpret it. Are the different fishing regulations associated with different bluegill population sizes? Show your analyses and calculations (must do a t-test by hand, not using t.test formula in excel), report the results of a t-test, and any relevant statistics in support of your answer. 3. (p. 379, your turn) Using a chi-square test, determine whether an observed distribution of 12 mice in the bare zone and 8 mice in the grass differs significantly from an expected even distribution of mice. 4. For what types of data do we use chi-square tests?
