Distribution, Facility Planning and Location Analysis Homework
1.
What is the difference between a product, process and fixed facility layout?
Process Layout is machines grouped by the process they perform, product layout
differs because it uses a linear arrangement of workstations to produce a specific
process, and fixed facility layout is used in projects where products can’t be
moved.
2.
What is a hybrid layout and what advantages would it provide (thinking question)?
The hybrid layout is a combination of more than one type of layout. The hybrid
layout can create better efficiency of product layout in a project that uses process
layout.
3.
When would a relationship diagram be effective for layout planning?
When there is no quantifiable data.
4.
What is the link between facility layout planning and the theory of constraints
(thinking question)?
The goal of layout planning is to eliminate waste and to increase capacity which
is correlated with the theory of constraints.
5.
What is the difference between a distribution center and a fulfillment center?
A distribution center accumulates and consolidates products from multiple
sources while a fulfillment center only receives and ships smaller items.
6.
What is cross docking?
Cross docking removes the storage of items at a facility. Products are unloaded
at a facility, sorted, and reloaded on a truck/train to its destination.
7.
Why may the traditional location analysis of proximity to customers or raw materials
not be as effective as locating near other supply chain nodes?
(thinking question)
Traditional location analysis uses warehouses, customers, and suppliers. A
process is needed to get the product from the port to customers.
8.
Why is location critical from a retail or service location perspective?
The consumers will visit the business that is in nearest proximity to the target
market. The right location will lead to higher profits and providing the correct
products for customers.
9.
Think of your favorite store, is there a logical plan to the layout of that facility?
My favorite store is Costco, and they have a great facility layout with each aisle
labeled clearly to make it easy for customers to navigate the massive store.
Costco also provides food samples to help bring more sales to specific products
and after checking out there is a food court to generate even more sales.
10. Why would a retail facility want to layout a store to expose as many products as
possible to the customer?
To gain the customers attention to specific products which will create more sales.
Customers sometimes go into retail stores not looking for anything specific and
this could help a product stand out and possibly buy it.
