IE 312 Laboratory Report Format,
Instructions and Rubric
A substantial part of the required work in this course involves writing
short, individual reports on the work you have done in the laboratory.
Each report should summarize the work performed in lab as well as
analysis and interpretation of any additional lab data given to you in
support of the lab. Your laboratory report should demonstrate both your
understanding of the subject and your ability to communicate that
understanding to others. Your report grade will be based on your success
in both areas.
Each lab report will include a Report Body (text) that is limited to 2-
pages in length for in-person labs and 4-pages in length for online
lab/homework assignments.
In addition your report will include
additional figures, tables and references that are appropriate for the lab
report and are not restricted in length. All components of the report,
including figures and tables, are to be your individual contribution.
Do
not insert figures and tables copied by others.
General Instructions:
Submit your report as a single .pdf
Use a legible font; a font size of 11 and a spacing of 1.0
Number all pages
Do not use a separate title page.
Use a brief title block at the top of the
first page of the report that includes:

Your name and lab section number
LAB:
Title of the experiment from the lab handout
DATE:
Date of the experiment (when you did it in the FAME lab)
the words IN-PERSON or ONLINE depending on whether you were
physically present in lab (attendance will be checked)

the most important
characteristics of the
investigation.

Results (30 Points)
This section of the report shows what you found. Please include any
tables and graphs that were used for recording and the complete data for
them here. This section should also include any observations and
photographs that you have for the experiment.
Do not try and explain
the results here, this is all that you observed and recorded.
Note:
All data tables and graphs must be carefully thought out. In general, the
data tables used in your lab handouts must be reorganized for inclusion
in your lab reports.

Commentary
Text briefly introduces
all tables and graphs,
provides a summary of
each, and identifies all
important trends to the
reader. Text states
which data is being
ignored and provides
justification for doing so.
Text introduces some of
the tables and graphs
but ignores others.
Some important trends
are not identified. Some
relevant graphs have
been omitted.
In depth
analysis that belongs in
discussion is included.
Tables and graphs
are either omitted, not
introduced, or not
summarized and
trends are not
identified.

Discussion (40 Points; graded together with
conclusions)
In this section, the results are interpreted and you make your inferences.
Describe the why you think the data turned out like it did. Insert your
scientific opinion in this section. Any calculations and graphs based on
the results are to be displayed here.
Make sure you talk about the
questions from the end of each handout here.
When writing this
part, ask yourself the following questions. In what ways do my results
confirm, contradict, or modify my original expectations? In what ways are
the results limited? What further tests are needed? What reasons do I
have for trusting the results? What reasons are there for believing that
these relationships are significant? This is the section of your report that
separates the A's from the C's!
Conclusion/Summary (10 Points; graded together with
discussion)
This section is a summary of the results and discussion from the report.
Report only the key findings of the report here. Directly answer the
report objective(s) here. Do not be vague.
