Analyzing US Cybersecurity Crime Data
Directions:
Using the
FBI Internet Crime Data for 2021
to support your reasoning, answer the
following questions.
1.
On page 21 of the document, a bar graph displays the three states with the highest number of
cybercrime victims. What are those three states? Why do you think they may have the highest
number of victims?
Texas, Florida, California
I think they have the most number of victims because they have better access to technology
and also they have a high population in those states compared to others like Ohio or New
Jersey
2.
The three states with the highest victim rates are California, Texas, and Florida (found on page
21). The table below displays each state’s total population, as well as the percentage of those
who are victims to cybercrimes. Which state has the largest population? Does the state with
the largest population also have the highest victim rate? What conclusions can you make from
the data?
State
Total Population
Percentage of victims per state
California
39,237,836
.17%
Texas
29,572,941
.14%
Florida
21,780,000
.21%
California has the larest population. Florida has the highest percentage of victims per state.
Having a large population does not necessarily correlate with having the highest victim rate. Despite California
having the largest population, Florida has a higher percentage of cybercrime victims. This indicates that factors
other than population size, such as the prevalence of targeted scams and the cybersecurity awareness of
residents, can influence victim rates.

3.
Once he divided the total victim losses by the amount of victims per state, Jaden found the
following:
a.
$18,302.25 lost per victim in California
b.
$14,731.69 lost per victim in Texas
c.
$19,265.98 lost per victim in New York
He thinks this means that New York must have the highest number of total losses in the
United States. Is he correct? Why or why not? (Hint: look for clues on page 27 of the
document).
Jaden thinks New York has the highest total losses because it has the highest loss per victim.
However, this is not necessarily correct.
Page 27 indicates that the states with the highest total victim losses are California, Texas, and New
York.
4.
On page 27 of the document, the three states with the highest victim losses are California,
Texas, and New York. What reasons might adversaries have for targeting these three
locations?
They are major economic hubs and they have a large population that provides a bigger pool of
potential victims.
5.
On page 26, which territory has the smallest number of victims? Explain why you think this is
true.
The territory with the smallest number of victims is American Samoa. This could be because of the
low population that they have and also the limited internet access.
