What does the law say about the instruction and assessment of students with disabilities?
The law says that children with disabilities must be included in assessment programs with accommodations, as needed and students with disabilities must have access to general education curriculum and be working towards the same standards as other students. 3.
Why is it important that students with disabilities have access to the general education curriculum? What are some ways to help these students to access the general education curriculum?
Besides that it is part of the law, it helps gives students with disabilities access to a broader range of materials for learning. By including them in general education courses these students can gain access to the general education curriculum.
4.
What are accommodations? Modifications? Alternate assessments? When should each of these be used?
Accommodation is a service or support that helps a student to fully access the subject matter and instruction, and to accurately demonstrate what he or she knows related to the child’s disability across all of the general education curriculum. (Students with motor, sensory, or information processing deficits, learning problems, or students who have trouble expressing themselves due to motor or sensory deficits or language differences)
Modifications are changes in instruction or curriculum for students in which the content of the instruction or the performance expectations are altered. (used when all possible accommodations have been considered but require additional measures to help them progress in the general curriculum)
Alternate assessments are guidelines for the participation of students with disabilities who cannot take part in state and district assessments. (used when assessing students’ performance
and progress of those who cannot participate in general assessments)
