Read the following scenario and complete the assignment that follows. Soon after you begin a new job, you receive a troubling report from the company’s new 401(k) provider. Several Social Security numbers do not match the names of the employees who provided them, which suggests that these individuals may be undocumented immigrants and ineligible to work in the United States. You begin an investigation. However, your boss quickly orders you to stop, explaining that the company cannot afford to terminate those employees even if they are undocumented because that would leave the company shorthanded. When you
express concern about this deliberate violation of federal immigration laws, the company’s leadership is unworried. The reason is that the governmental ICE, CBP, and USCIS units responsible for enforcing these laws have more significant problems to address. Even if caught, the fine would be an acceptable business expense, as the company is making huge profits due to the inexpensive labor. Assignment: Using what you have learned in this chapter, describe how you would change the company’s policy toward employing undocumented workers. How effective do you think you would be? Why?
