As you went through the Orientation Seminar, what stood out as probably the most important thing for you to have learned? Why do you feel this information is important for you to know as you progress through your program?
The Orientation Seminar was informationally important in the means of providing me with direction while trying to decipher my academic plan and clearing up a few concerns I had when applying for this program (uncertainty surrounding travel times, dates, and academic readiness for residency). I wanted to
feel comfortable in the progression of the courses which pertained to being successful when entering those residency and internship phases of the program and I felt that the time spent in the orientation seminar assisted in reducing that concern. Another worry was if there was enough support provided in terms of academic planning and organizing my current work schedule to properly coincide with the time frames for residency and internship, something which the seminar assisted with by providing a clear explanation of those expectations and information pertaining to time management and navigating the course room dashboard to access additional resources. One such resource is the availability of the advising faculty which was explained would be an ongoing support system through the doctoral program. Something that was mentioned but not really elaborated on while applying for the program, as
I want to start this new phase of my career with the most information and support possible. Moreover, having the many resources of the Capella library and research sites (which I would otherwise not have access to) is something I am looking forward to and excited about enhancing my essays and topics of discussion as I progress through the program.
Engaging in the RAILS activity was a bit of a refresher for me, the structure of it was similar to the research database used during my master program with Northwestern, and although I am a returning student to Capella the current data base is much more advance than when I attained my undergraduate degree in 2014. I especially liked the advance research options and how you can enhance the search with the use of key words/phrases and linking topics together. Moreover, the extensive search options will be extremely beneficial as we go through this program and need to refine information down to a specific topic of interest or find a supporting citation. Lastly, I learned where my strengths and weaknesses are in utilizing
the system, however the ease of which the library is structured allows for a quick adaptability to the nuances of refining from broad research to more targeted information. Moving forward I will just need to get back into the swing of academic thinking and the resources provided to us in the library database will definitely help me flatten out the learning curve in order to master the many courses needed to complete this program.
