Hello Everyone,
Please find my QQR on the definition of information from the article Fundamental Forms of Information:
Question:
Bates in her article tries to describe the fundamental forms and definitions of information in the current world. Reading the article a question arises to me - What is the exact meaning of information? Is there a specific definition, and can it be ever clearly defined? With expanding
knowledge in the current industry and the field of information, will information scientists ever reach a consensus on a single definition that everyone will agree upon? How would the average person describe the concept of information in simple terms?
Quotation:
“
Information is the pattern of organization of matter and energy
.” (Parker,1974, p.10)
This statement suggests that information is the organized arrangement of matter and energy. It highlights that information is closely linked to the fundamental organization of elements in the universe, indicating a connection between information and the underlying physical and energetic patterns that create meaningful structures. This perspective encourages reflection on
how information is intertwined with the essence of our existence, encompassing both the tangible(matter) and the intangible(energy). In essence, it prompts consideration of how information is manifested in the patterns observed in the physical world.
Reaction:
Considering the subject and definition of Information, what does it signify for individuals outside the field of information science? Is it possible to ever formulate a definitive definition
of information? How do information scientists generally perceive information? Does it encompass knowledge gained from others, the melodies of birds singing, the Earth's movements, the nature of a black hole, the sounds of animals, the contours of valleys, the taste of water we drink or the food we consume, the energy that flows around us or the knowledge we acquire and share to others? What about the written text and the diverse forms of knowledge that have not been shared with others? The knowledge that has never been discovered or may be never! As I delve deeper into my studies in Information Science, I may refine and narrow down my understanding of this multifaceted concept.
