Running Head: CYBERSECURITY IN THE AGE OF RAPID E-BUSINESS GROWTH 2 CYBERSECURITY IN THE AGE OF RAPID E-BUSINESS GROWTH The internet is a big place with a lot of people, companies, governments, and artificial intelligence bots constantly using it. With every connection, subscription, internet communication, and interaction, the increased exposure to a cyber-attack becomes greater. That’s why there is a lot of focus these days on cybersecurity and making it more effective. By looking at cybersecurity mistakes and errors in the past, we can better arm ourselves, and companies can protect themselves and their consumer base more effectively. SolarWinds Cyberattack: A Case Study In 2019 and 2020, there was a massive cyber-attack against the software company named “SolarWinds”. SolarWinds was singled out because its main focus is network administrative services. The hackers gained access to SolarWinds by using what’s known as a “supply chain attack,” inserting a malicious code into the “Orion” network management system. By creating a back door malware update to “Orion,” the hackers were able to gain access to countless client network infrastructures. Because of this cyber-attack, the data theft occurred openly and uninterrupted over two years (Sanger & Perlroth, 2020). The Implications for Consumer Privacy and Data Security 1. Consumer Privacy: Despite its original focus on businesses, the SolarWinds breach threatened individual internet users with invasive privacy concerns as well. Terms and agreements between organizations and the individuals tied to using the organization’s network can endanger individual confidentiality by exposing private information. Cyberattacks can have a negative impact on everyone who has accounts or interacts with the network, no matter how targeted they seem. This was a great example for the need in

Data Security: The breach exposed sensitive information from affected organizations, leading to concerns about intellectual property theft, financial losses, and reputational damage. This incident stresses the critical need for serious cybersecurity measures to protect corporate and government and intellectual properties (Temple-Raston, 2021). The Link Between E-Business and the Internet With the internet becoming an even larger part of the world, e-commerce is growing rapidly. Online commercial transactions encompass a broad range: from purchases made via e- commerce platforms to financial services accessed through online banking, all the way to platforms geared for advertisers. E-business wouldn’t exist without the internet: 1. Global Reach: Global accessibility and commerce opportunities arise through online platforms. Online marketplaces like Amazon and Alibaba reaped the benefits of online connectivity by expanding their operations into foreign countries and catering to a worldwide customer base, becoming international enterprises with massive influence (Stapleton, 2021). 2. Data Exchange: E-business relies on the exchange of information between businesses and consumers. The internet serves as the infrastructure for this exchange, supporting secure transactions and information sharing through technologies like encryption and secure sockets layer (SSL) (Castells, 2020). 3. Cybersecurity: The growth of e-business has broadened cybersecurity concerns. As more transactions and information flow online, businesses become increasingly vulnerable to
