Project Scope
What is Project Scope Management and Why is it Important?
This article focuses on what project scope is and why it matters in project management.
Project scope is the process that is set at the beginning of the project to help manage goals,
tasks, deliverables, deadlines, and budgets. Defining project scope makes it much easier to
manage and make changes to the project later along the line. Project scope is very important
when it comes to project management. There are many details when it comes to projects and
many things that could lead to changes in scope. In fact, scope creep affects 52% of projects and
is a great concern for project managers. To manage scope creep, you can create a work
breakdown structure to create a breakdown of the scope, define scope as clearly as possible,
make the process of defining scope a collaborative process to prevent misinterpretations, and
consult relevant stakeholders about the scope because it is not easily changed afterwards. To
accurately identify scope, the project must follow the project scope management process. This
process involves 6 steps. First is planning scope management and this where you create a scope
plan document that you can refer to later. Next is collecting requirements and this step involves
collecting stakeholders’ expectations and finding a reasonable solution to avoid project delays.
Third is defining scope and includes turning requirements into a detailed description of the
service or product. This step would also require a scope statement to refer to later in the
project. Fourth is making a project breakdown structure to break down everything that needs to
be done. This can be done with a software for easier use and organization. Fifth is validating
scope and in this step, the scope and deliverables are sent to high-ups for evaluation and
approvals. Last is controlling scope and this is where project managers ensure that the project
stays within the defined scope. This article was useful and will likely be referenced in the future
as our group is trying to define our scope right now. As our project is an updated version of the
app “PurdueGuide”, an interactive map app that is no longer up and running, we are also trying
to figure out how much to include in this project. We want to make a function that would align
your schedule to the app and would help you track your classes but didn’t know if we wanted
other functions. This article laid out easy steps to figure out our scope and our group will be
using that in the future.
