The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) seeks effective aviation security, while
ensuring the safety of passengers, and preventing security threats within the United States. An
emerging security threat within the aviation industry is synthetic identity fraud. Synthetic identity
fraud is combining real and fabricated information to create new identities for things like ticket
fraud, smuggling, and identity theft. To prevent or reduce this issue the TSA employs identity
verification procedures, secure document authentication, advanced passenger screening,
collaboration with law enforcement and intelligence agencies, continuous training and education,
and technology enhancements. Identity Verification procedures include checking government-
issued identification documents and validating them against databases and security features.
Secure document authentication involves the TSA officers, who are trained to detect fabricated
identification documents, using tools like UV lights, magnifiers, and electronic scanners to
validate such documents. Advanced passenger screening systems analyze things like passenger
information, watchlist databases, and travel patterns to determine the risk of each traveler. The
TSA collaborates with local law enforcement and intelligence agencies to stay informed on the
latest information of synthetic identity fraud. The TSA implements continuous training and
education in order for the TSA officers to be skillful in identifying fraudulent identification.
Technology enhancements involve advanced document scanning and authentication systems,
biometric technologies like facial recognition, and machine learning algorithms to look for
anomalies. The TSA uses facial recognition to verify passengers’ identity and matches it to
pictures already provided to the government (TSA, 2021). A recommendation that I have is to
use more facial recognition and even add fingerprinting into the layers of security measures. I
say more facial recognition, because with my job, I travel every week to various locations within
the United States and even outside the United States, and I have only used facial recognition one
time. I say fingerprinting, as every person has a unique fingerprint, therefore the risk of synthetic
identity fraud would be much lower.
