IDS 105 Project Template Cultural Awareness Guidebook Identify your chosen scenario. I have chosen scenario 3 – Workplace. Conflict #1: Disagreement with a colleague over work styles. Part One: Social Justice 1. Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality in the scenario. Fairness in this scenario would mean the absence of discrimination or prejudice in the workplace and that each employee will be treated without favoritism or bias. Equality in this scenario would not mean that all workers are equal across the board, but rather that all workers will be provided equal opportunities for placement, promotions, pay, benefits, etc. as their level of qualifications and work ethic meet the standards set forth by the company. Lastly in this scenario of the workplace, justice would be focused on administration and the company’s ideas of fairness and equality and how those standards are upheld. 2. Describe how bias can influence your perception of social justice in the scenario. In this scenario, two colleagues are experiencing a conflict over work styles and how their workload should be planned each day. Bias can influence one’s perception of social justice here because from the start of the conflict, each side thinks the other is “wrong” and each believe the other’s actions to be unfair. The individuals involved are focusing on ideas that only support what they already believe. Bias could also be perceived through aspects such as gender. In this scenario, if say a woman is the individual that plans her daily tasks, she may assume her colleague is unorganized and only handles tasks as they come up because he is a man. 3. Describe how different narratives in society can impact your perception of social justice. Narratives are what we have been given since birth. Essentially, they are experiences told to us from someone else’s perspective that we then use to form the basis of our own ideas of the world and people around us. This alone is why different narratives can impact one’s perception of social justice because a narrative holds power that can have either positive or negative effects. In this scenario for instance, a negative narrative could be started by an indignant colleague saying, “this department is unable to plan tasks effectively” because they are upset about how their co-worker handles their tasks. This type of negative narrative could quickly lead others to think similar thoughts which could end up affecting company morale. 4. Describe the core principles of social justice in the scenario. I feel that participation is the main principle of social justice that lends itself to this scenario. Participation as a principle of social justice refers to holding space for others and feeling safe to speak one’s mind and to demonstrate their own ways of making contributions, no matter their identity or background. Also, equity, which refers to the distribution of resources to groups of people and in this scenario, it seems that the conflict may stem from a personal preference rather than a lack of equity on the company’s part. And lastly, diversity, as employees may be more open to inclusivity of different working styles if they better understood diversity and could use it as a tool to resolve workplace disagreements.
Part Two: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration 1. Describe how an awareness of other cultures can benefit interpersonal communication with people in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.) [Insert response here.] 2. Describe how exposure to diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.) [Insert response here.] 3. Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.) [Insert response here.] 4. Describe how you would demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario. I would demonstrate cultural fluency by offering to have an open conversation to discuss the differences we seem to have regarding work styles. I would communicate with clarity and listen with intent to understand in hopes to collaborate our ideas to provide a positive outcome for everyone. I would respect the boundaries my colleague may have over some of my suggestions, while also remaining true to my own values and needs. I would approach the situation with curiosity, rather than frustration, as a way to avoid conflict while also learning more about my colleague to help understand how we can work better together. And I would remain open-minded and flexible to think that, although my work style has suited my own needs, there is more than one way to complete a task and I may just learn something I’d never thought of before. 5. Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness. Having cultural fluency can benefit my self-awareness by allowing me to remain open minded and think outside of my own perspective to have a deeper understanding of why someone may think, or act differently than I do. Allowing myself this knowledge can give rise to unexpected connections and lessen the probability of conflicts due to judgement and stereotypes. Part Three: Communication Strategies to Navigate Conflict (Complete this section in Module Five.) 1. Describe the components of the conflict represented in the scenario. [Insert response here.] 2. Describe different interpersonal communication strategies that can be used in conflict resolution. [Insert response here.] 3. Choose an appropriate communication strategy you would employ in the scenario. Include an explanation of why you chose that communication strategy. [Insert response here.] 4. Describe the potential challenges of communication in the scenario.
