UNIT READING NOTES:
1. Identify the Characteristics of Meaningful Learning
→ The design of the task will determine how well the students grasp the idea, however this may not work for all students due to their different learning abilities
→ Testing done in schools aren’t effective as they have very little connection to outside experiences, which means students loose the focus to fully understand the meaning behind the concept
→ To allow students to learn meaningful, the teacher must create meaningful tasks that relate
back and connect back to the idea through outside experiences, which will then achieve active engagement
→ School curriculums should assist students in recognising and solving problems, comprehending new concepts, set goals, regulate their learning and what is the best way for them to learn
ACTIVE: manipulative/observant
→ student gain their skills and knowledge through active learning lessons, which are practical lessons that allow them to engage and interact to understand the concept, as well as communicating in collaboration with others to collectively understand
→ Meaningful Learning needs actively engaging tasks by which they can use their environment to understand and observe
CONSTRUCTIVE: articulative/reflective
→ it is very important that all students must understand their efforts, and acknowledge the successes as well as reflecting on areas on improvement.
→ Being exposed to new experiences create meaningful learning opportunities as student are intrigued by this new exposure, this allows them to reflect on this experience with trying to connect it with a previous one and take what they can away from this observation
→ Different students learn and process information differently so each person is going to have a different mental models that give them an explanation of this learning opportunity
INTENTIONAL: goal-directed/regulatory
→ All human behaviour is goal directed (Schank, 1994)
→ Goals can be simple and have less thought and preparation, or they can be more complex and can take a while to achieve because there are different steps that you have to take in order
to get there
→ When students are working towards a goal, they are more likely to be creating a meaningful learning experience as the intention is there
→ Technology has to be used in a way that will engage students and reflect on their understanding, as it can allow them to understand and use their knowledge they have gained in future scenarios
→ When students plan out tasks using technology or conducting a research problem they’re hoping to solve this is purposeful and are creating meaningful learning
AUTHENTIC: complex/contextual
