Scenario One:
The clean up from this incident will take some time. However, the first step is to replace the universal power supply (UPS.) The replacement should be identical to the previous or an improvement over it. As the servers are still offline, we don’t need to shut them down before unplugging them. Then it’s simply a matter of swapping out the old UPS for the new one. The UPS should be placed where the previous one was located in order to avoid having to rewire the entire room to coordinate. The next focus should be re-establishing the firewall rules and route tables. This should be done before the network is fully brought back online. This will ensure that the network is properly protected when brought back online. The same rules as were previously established should be used again, though this is the perfect time to reevaluate the rules previously established and update them as necessary. Configuring the router table to duplicate what had been set up before the incident should come next. They should be the same as they were previously in order to maintain continuity and allow for data to continue to be backed up as scheduled. I would say that the current backup strategy is insufficient. The current schedule is backing data up once a week. I would suggest that data be backed up every other day in order to ensure that data isn’t lost in the case of an emergency such as this situation. Cloud storage is the best option for storing our data backups as it is off-site and will be kept safe should this incident repeat itself.
New policies should be put in place to ensure that data is properly backing up regularly and that the hardware, such as the UPS, are working as intended. Emergency plans and security policies should be reevaluated regularly to ensure that they are both up to date and all employees involved are aware of them. My recommendation would be to have these reevaluations at least twice yearly.
Scenario Two:
The first step to recover the lost data must be to completely wipe and rebuild the PC in question. We can then restore back to the most recent stored images of the assets, which will return data to the point of the most recent back up. While this might result in the loss of some more recent data,
it will get the employee back to working with as up to date data as can be provided. Because the Excel file saved to the network drive was corrupted, training should be issued to all employees on how to identify and what to do with a corrupted file. The file should be removed from the network and isolated on a computer that is not on the network. Then we can attempt to repair the file to retrieve it. Should the repair fail, we are left to attempting to extract the data (by clicking the Extract Data option when opening the file.) The current back-up strategy is insufficient. Back ups of data should be made every other day for
basic office work. Should an individual be working on a particularly vital assignment they should
back up daily. Additionally, data should be backed up on both the physical server in office and onto a cloud-based storage. This provides us with multiple failsafes and the cloud ensures that the data cannot be lost should the physical location become compromised. This will ensure that the data can be accessed regardless of the status of the office itself. The policy regarding employee’s personal devices must be reassessed. Given the current technology levels of an average cellphone, there is no need for employees to bring in personal music on a USB and this incident should have been completely avoidable. Training regarding new policies should begin immediately, including new expectations on the BOYD policy and the
limitations on allowed devices and their interactions with workstations. Big Picture Considerations:
