5-2 Activity
By critically analyzing workplace wellness programs, my framework of perception has been altered in the sense of remaining unbiased when conducting an analysis of a situation. This doesn’t just mean in research of a topic, but also in daily life decisions. It is important to remain open minded and unbiased to better understand all sides. I have learned that by understanding opposition, you can understand what challenges may arise and begin to develop ways to overcome those challenges. Critical analysis has also taught me to become a continuous learner and be open to technological, scientific, cultural, and social advances. By doing so, it will benefit my overall wellness and help me evolve individually.
As I analyzed my bias, I began to perceive the world in a more compassionate and understanding sense. Moreover, my perception is viewed more through a scientific lens, as I feel
the lens gives a foundation to human behavior. I now look at opinions and situations and think, what have they been through in their life to get them to this point. I don’t have a stubborn approach where I am firm in my belief anymore. I am more open to know and understand why they feel or think the way they do. Before beginning my analysis on the topic of workplace wellness programs, I had an extremely bias opinion that all employers should implement these programs because they will help employees improve their wellness in all aspects. However, after conducting research, I
have learned that the topic goes deeper than its “right” or “wrong”. I learned that there is good reason for opposition as the many studies on workplace wellness programs were concluding minimal results for employee wellness. By examining my bias, I now perceive the community and world around me as people who have a deeper meaning and story behind their individuality and their reasons of thinking. This allows me to be more accepting of other beliefs and values. Critically analyzing wellness can influence my field of study in business and communications by giving me a broader perspective. For instance, the Eight Dimensions of Wellness has taught me that mental and physical health are connected, but also divided into occupational, emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual. I now understand that wellness in any aspect will affect the other if it is not handled accordingly. Not only do I apply this thinking to myself, but I also will apply this thinking to others. Business
and communications are fields of study that deal with people, therefore, making it important to understand those you are dealing with. Welcoming a broader prospective into my life, will open my mind to different ideologies that could help me evolve in the eight dimensions of wellness providing me with a better quality of life. (Eight Dimensions of Wellness, 2020)
In the future, studying wellness through different lenses will give me multiple perspectives. Having multiple perspectives will allow me to form a stronger opinion based on factually information. When understanding the next big topic of study in my field, I will be capable of studying it with an unbiased opinion. This will assist me in overcoming any challenges or obstacles when seeking clarity on the subject.
