Week 5 Assignment Elements Used to Determine Credibility
Importance
Source
Sources are an important way to determine the credibility of an author. The sources can display a great deal of credibility from the information associated and provided by the source. When it comes to academic materials, scholarly journals and a peer review, they are all seen as reliable sources because of the fact that researchers have taken the time to read, review, and validate them. Before being published, most material or statistics have been screened to ensure that the material and statistics being provided to the public is credible. However, certain materials and statistics found on certain websites such as, Wikipedia, are most likely non-credible. They are viewed as non-credible because anyone can add any information they would like, along with deleting any information.
Evaluation
To determine if a source is credible, one must be able to validate the source. How much information is available to support the source? Is the topic expansive enough to provide credible information?
Scope
When a source can go into detail about a matter and provide evidence to help follow it, this insures there is more credibility behind it. Although, when a source provides data that is disproportionately spread-out, it is obvious to conclude that the focused topic was not investigated enough to provide a clear understanding making the readers skeptical about believing it.
Validity
Sources should always have a reference just as papers have to be cited, if a source makes a claim that claim has to be validated for confirmation. Detail
If an author takes the time to examine and study the sources provided in their work to help themselves and their readers gain clarity on a certain subject, the authors work is viewed as credible. It helps the readers to see the time and effort the author put into the information provided to the readers. Timeliness
Is the information current? Dependent on the information and when it was written ensuring that the claim holds true or if it’s been updated is another component in determining sources used.
Accuracy
If the author supports knowledge claims with the proper forms of public evidence, both empirical and logical, and if the author cites
other research that is relevant to his or her claims. These are perhaps the most important characteristics in determining the reliability of a source.
Authority
Authority is important in determining the credibility of a website because it establishes who is in charge of the site, who wrote the
information covered there, and more. It is important to look at the background information of an author so that you can understand where the author's potential biases might lie, how the author knows this information, etc.
Content
When one is reading or viewing an article, website, or news, the information provided to them can be viewed as credible because of the references that the author has provided the readers and viewers with. The references the author leaves have to be relevant
and supporting to the case and the focus of the article, website or news. However, the references provided have to be credible along
with giving the readers and viewers the assurance that the author does know what he or she is talking about and that they are an expert in the field that they are discussing.
Audience
The audience the claim is written for is important to determine if the information was written to be peer reviewed, academia, journalistic, etc.
Consistency
When it comes to credible data, it always needs to be consistent. It should not appear that the source is only holding his/her standard to correspond with his/her assumption and hold a different standard for anyone else that diverge from his or her thoughts. Anyone would realize this is biased and the source cannot be used as credible. Web Site
Checking websites for their information is key to ensuring the site
isn’t erroneous or a support of the claim. Check home pages, about us, and the domain is important to ensure the accuracy of its data. Format
Formatting of an article, newsletter, and a website is key. Usually, a website with pop-ups and ads everywhere should be avoided. It is a way for the website or article to attract views in order for them to promote what they are advertising and to push views to click on the ads. However, an article that is formatted properly such as, an academic journal, the information, references, and the material provided are more credible and trustworthy.
Relevance
Does this article relate to your topic? What connection can be made between the information that is presented and your thesis? An easy way to check for relevance is by reviewing the Abstract or Summary of the article before downloading the entire article.
Perspective
Biased sources can be helpful in creating and developing an argument, but make sure you find sources to help you understand the other side as well. Extremely biased sources will often misrepresent information and that can be ineffective to use in a paper.
Purpose
What is the author’s purpose? This should be taken into consideration when evaluating source. You should check to see if
they author is neutral.
