W2: Security Education, Certifications, and Impact of Homeland Security Discussion Questions : What impact have federal regulations and associated rules and guidelines had on the private security profession in the United States? Concerning such regulations, should government even play a role, or should the industry regulate itself? Offer supporting information for your position. The impact the all the rules and regulations had on the private security profession was a positive one and it ensured they the companies, state or organizations did what they were supposed to do for their staff to receive the proper training. Before the government was involved the stated was not focusing to much on training their security personnel. Some where doing what they were supposed to do but some was doing the bare minimum. As stated in the textbook, “A 2005 review of state regulation and training found that 43 states now license or regulate the security industry. While this is impressive, this study found that mandated training occurs in only 13 states and the variety in hours ranges from four to just over 40.” (Fischer, Halibozek, & Walters, 2012). While states and organizations may have the resources and certifications to train security personnel, there can still be a lack of investment in training and a focus on other priorities. This is why it is important for the government to stay involved and ensure that states and organizations are following policies and providing proper training to their personnel. By doing so, we can help ensure that security measures are effective and that tragic events like 9/11 are prevented. After the tragic events of 9/11, people understandably began questioning airport security procedures. The government responded by launching investigations and implementing new rules and regulations to strengthen security and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The rules and guidelines also impacted the private security profession the government's response included giving employers more power by allowing them to access their employees' criminal histories, if any existed. Additionally, the government mandated that everyone in the security profession take drug tests periodically. These measures were put in place to help ensure that security personnel were trustworthy and capable of doing their jobs effectively. References: Fischer, R., Halibozek, E., & Walters, D. (2012).
