In my interview with Katelyn Barry, I learned that at Rock Creek Middle School in Happy Valley, Oregon; Kaitlyn uses the NGSS standards. NGSS is the Next Generation Science Standards. This standard consists of real-world lessons on current events with the
goal of getting K-12 up to date science standards (Science). The current curriculum used includes more material then they could cover in a school year, so standards are implemented to know that students are reaching priority standards throughout the year. Rock Creek Middle School doesn’t have a huge amount of ethnic diversity; mainly middle class, white population. Ms. Barry believes the school could do a better job of supporting the cultural identity of their students. In the case of self-identity Ms. Barry realizes she is still developing as a teacher; she has learned that when she is positively engaged with students, she has gotten more developmental growth from her classroom. The Hattie mind frame that I think she best represents is continued evaluation of herself and her processes towards her students. Ms. Barry gave me very good options and ideas for continued growth in their professional development. Some of the ideas were meeting with building and district Science professional learning communities (PLC’s), take additional online courses (Science, Adolescent Development, Equity, etc.), attending conferences, webinars and looking for books on one’s spare time to read. To find more professional development opportunities, she advised me to meet with other people in your building who teach your same subject. The Heritage Institute was another route that has interesting online courses that can keep your learning ongoing.

Before the interview I wasn’t really aware of how much time is put into self-evaluation as
a growing teacher. I also wasn’t aware how much it would take to answer one of the suggested interview questions, some of her answers would be much longer than I expected. During the interview I felt good because a lot of the answers she was giving me
were ideas or concepts that I had recently read about. It felt good being able to see coursework that I’ve read put into practical use. I think she felt good but was also surprised by the depth and amount of questions I asked. I was learning so much that I felt that I had to keep asking questions. 3.
I didn’t know what to expect going into the interview, so I was positively surprised with the outcome. The process of setting up the interview was easy because school hadn’t started yet, so she had time, and conducting the interview was very informative and beneficial for me. Compiling what she said so I could complete my task at an appropriate time went well, though was probably the most difficult. There was a lot of information and notes to go through. Ms. Barry’s answers were very thought out and precise, so it made understanding concepts and what she would do in her classroom very clear and relatable. Her willingness to even participate in the interview was another thing that went
well. With what is going on in the world, COVID and teachers preparing for back to school, I anticipated it being more difficult to arrange, but to find someone that I felt comfortable enough to approach and be able to participate in a Zoom call with, made the process go much smoother.

I agree with Ms. Barry’s application of state standards in her day to day approach with students and their learning. She has a set of standards that students need to achieve and through her use of data driven instruction she can engages with students on her way to those goals. I also agree with Ms. Barry when it comes to wanting to create more of a social impact in the science community that effects education. Creating exercises that can
incorporate equity into science is something I will look forward to learning more about. Ms. Barry’s focus on self-growth and how that can positively affect your role as a teacher
and positively affect your connection with your students was inspiring to hear about. I agree with her that it takes having a passion and love for being around kids and creating an atmosphere in which they want to grow. The mind frame of focusing on self-
evaluation while also creating positive bond and interactions with your students and other
staff is something, I hope to have a solid grasp on when it’s my turn to step into the classroom. I also agree with the way she views teachers as having the opportunity and ability to continuously grow in the classroom. With how much technology we have available to us, growth and education should be ongoing. Looking for seminars and conferences in my local area or online to get a broader spectrum of educational knowledge is something I will continue to keep growing and learning. Finding professional development in your building or district is another aspect of growth that a teacher much utilize and continue learning from. 5.
In summary I learned that being a science teacher is an always growing subject, not only the aspect of curriculum is changing in, some respects rapidly, but also the continued growth and eagerness to learn that it takes to become a successful teacher. A teacher is much more than a person that stands up in front of class and just reads out of a textbook; being able to create an atmosphere that makes the students want
to engage and learn is much of what it takes to be a good teacher. Understanding that your role as a teacher is to
continue learning yourself, so that you can be up to date in your subject but also to show a willingness to learn and accept new information. If I was to conduct this interview today, I would ask more follow up questions. With this being my first formal school interview, I created a script and really wanted to stick to that, but now seeing the process and reading back some of her responses, I wish I would have asked a couple more questions than I did this time. 6.
Evaluating yourself is important so that you can see where you can grow and where you can change certain areas of how you interact or teach a subject. Another aspect that will help create teacher success is understanding the ability to work collaboratively with your peers as well as with your students. People don’t learn when they don’t feel safe so creating a safe place for students and other faculty will help fuel my success as a teacher. I believe my patience and passion towards kids learning is going to aid in my growth and development as a teacher. I will need to be more willing to self-evaluate and reflect and be more willing to accept negative feedback knowing that it’s only going to make me a better teacher in the long run. By the end of my program in 2023 I will have completed 2 books on adolescent youth in my spare time. That will show that on top of what I learn during this program I will continue to push myself and further look for educational
