Module 5 assignment Jacquelin Gregg Department of Criminal Justice, Southern New Hampshire University CJ 305 Technology in Criminal Justice February 8, 2024
The cybercrime that took place from this article is that cyberattackers gained the access to
Target’s computer gateway and served through credential stolen from a third-party vendor. By
using the credentials to exploit the weaknesses that was in Target’s system. Since the attackers
was able to gain the access to the customer service database, they proceeded to install malware
on the systems which captured full names, phone numbers, email addresses, payment card
numbers, credit card verification codes and multiple other sensitive data. Due to the cybercrime
causing a data breach, the personal data was stolen from 60 million customers and the financial
information on 41 million customers. Due to the loss of personal information, it could put
everyone who was affected in risk of fraud in the future. Also due to the breach, Target provided
free credit monitoring services for the consumers that were affected; and the company also
agreed to pay up to $10,000 to consumers with the evidence that they suffered losses from the
data breach. Terms that were added to the lawsuit included that Target would develop a plan that
would strengthen their security and take all steps to ensure that another situation like the one that
happened wouldn’t happen again. Also, Target hired an executive that would maintain their new
program and hired a third-party expert who would evaluate the new system that was placed.
After reading this article about the cyberattack that happened at Target has changed my behavior
towards companies as a consumer and I am wanting to be more careful on how I give out my

personal information and my financial information. I was the type of person who would make
accounts for stores and keep my credit card information for faster check outs, but I am going to
delete the financial information and just keep it basic. Also, before reading this article I kept all
my passwords and login in names for all the apps or any websites that had all my information on
it that could be fraud so now I am making sure to delete all information that could be harmful so
I will not be a victim of fraud. My husband, my mother and I have all been affected by a
cybercrime. We were all victims of financial cybercrime, or I guess you could call it financial
fraud. We had people get access to our credit card information, bank account information and
would spend our money. Thankfully our banks have fraud alerts and alerted us every time
someone gained access to our financial information and they would give us the money back. References: McCoy, K. (2017, May 23).
