Part One: Interview Purpose
The intention of this meeting is to speak with Mr. Smith and prepare him for his trial against his wife Mrs. Jane Smith. Throughout this meeting I will gather information from Mr. Smith such on
his feelings about the upcoming trial against his wife for domestic abuse, and touch base with him as to why he is getting “cold feet” about testifying against his wife. I need to meet with him to make sure he is prepared for what is going to happen during the trial and how it will play out, as well as making him aware of the things that could be said during the time in the courtroom. I need this information to make sure I can properly assist Mr. Smith on how to handle this trial and
help him see that testifying against his wife will better his future for the good, and to keep him safe. My goal with this meeting is to ensure that Mr. Smith is prepared as he can be, and that he is as comfortable as possible. The information I will be providing him with is the step by step of how the trial will play out. I also need to make sure I am here for him mental and emotionally as this process can take a toll on domestic violence victim, and it can be really hard for them to speak up for themselves and give him any recourses he made need to return to after the trial, resources that can help him return to a normal life after the trial is over with. That may be helping him apply for housing assistance if he needs to leave his home or get him in contact with
an abuse counselor. Part Two: Setting
This interview will take place in a small meeting room inside a courthouse that is small and looks very uninviting. These rooms have the bare minimum, a table, and wooden chairs with three pictures in the room. With the nature of this crime, and Mr. Smiths uncertainty of the trial it
is inevitable that he will feel anxious and uneasy. There are also bars on the outsides of the windows which can potentially make him feel trapped and give him an unsettling feeling. It is
my job to make John Smith feel most comfortable during his interview and give him my full attention and positive reinforcement and encouragement. When it came to seating, I would offer Mr. Smith the chair closer to the doors and try my best to get him faced away from the bars on the outside of the windows with the hopes that he would feel more at ease and more likely to talk
to me with comfort. For myself, I would be completely comfortable in this setting. This meeting room inside the courthouse is where I can give Mr. Smith my full undivided attention without any interruptions or distractions so I too can have his full attention. With my level of comfort, I hope to ease Mr. Smiths mind and show him that I am on his side and want to do everything in my power to keep him safe. Having the meeting here in the courthouse allows me to maintain control over the interview and make adjustments as I see fit to help keep the comfort of my client, with the more comfortable Mr. Smith is, and the more I show him that I am willing to go to all means necessary
to protect him he may be more forth coming with anything that can help us during the trial.. Part Three: Techniques and Strategies I believe it needs to be made clear to Mr. Smith he is free to leave at any time. I believe this because as victims advocate, I am supposed to be here for support in many ways, I am here to be empathetic, I am here to help him with problem solving, and give him counseling like advice. My job is to make him feel safe, and to trust myself and the criminal justice system. If I tell Mr. Smith, he is not free to leave that will give him the feeling of being trapped and it will give him an immediate distrust for me and other victim advocates. Coming forward with abuse is already very hard, I need to make sure he knows he is free to leave at any time. Even If Mr. Smith did decide to leave, he needs to know that it is okay and if or when he needs us in the future, we will be here to help support him and help him get his life back on track. We do not want victims to
