2 When arriving on scene, what would you do to ensure that the scene is safe to enter and why? When arriving on scene you must make sure it is safe to enter so that no law enforcement, EMS or bystanders get hurt or are put in any danger. When law enforcement responds they should always assume the scene is not safe and danger is still imminent. Once they arrive, they should clear the scene looking for any suspects or weapons. Clearing the scene means going through every space and room with a weapon drawn in case danger is present. The first person on scene should look for signs of forced entry, positions of bodies, lighting, and any open doors (Price, 2021). The first arriving officer needs to take control of the scene as soon as they arrive. They need to determine the extent to which the scene has been protected since the crime occurred and establish scene security (Crime Scene Response Guidelines - Organization and Procedures for Search Operations, n.d.). After the scene is determined to be safe, they can then assess victims, issue a description of the suspect if there is still a danger to the public. They need to be aware of potential hazards such as pathogens, gasoline, and drugs (Police Officer Training: 4 Procedures for Responding to a Crime Scene, n.d.). Explain the need for the preliminary survey and why is it important concerning the integrity of the evidence? A preliminary survey is a walk-through of the crime scene with the in-charge law enforcement. They establish a path to enter and exit the scene, avoiding the path the suspect may have used and preserving the crime scene from possible contamination. During the preliminary survey law enforcement will evaluate the crime scene to help formulate a plan to process the scene and collect and preserve evidence.
