Career Opportunities 1. What knowledge, skills, and abilities are required of paralegals? - I used Indeed to search for in-state paralegal positions. For knowledge, one must possess legal terminology, knowledge about the particular office you are applying for (i.e., I searched for litigation paralegal work), excellent research and analytical skills to conduct legal research, multi-tasking skills, case management and effective communication skills (verbal, written). 2. Which of those requirements do you currently meet? - I feel I possess great communication skills as well as research skills. My current job in property management has helped me gain these attributes, as my position revolves around client discovery both in verbal and written forms. It is important I know how to multi-task and meet deadlines in my current line of work, this is also salient for a paralegal to be efficient in their work. 3. Which knowledge, skills, and abilities do you need to develop? - I need to further grow my knowledge in legal terminology and case management. I have never worked in a position that would have given me firsthand experience prior to studying to become a paralegal, so the ability to develop these particular skills further is definitely necessary. 4. What strengths do you have that will help you in this profession, and why? - I have a great level of professionalism, as well as interpersonal skills. When needed, I am able to work independent effectively, in high-pressure environments, and I am
very organized in my work. These are traits that are necessary in order to be a successful paralegal because of how much detail goes into this position. Having great attention to detail is important so as to not miss deadlines, as well as helps verbal communication with colleagues and court peers. Interpersonal skills are needed due to the fact you are the point of contact for clients. Having an open demeanor helps the client help you in your legal research and personal discovery into the potential case for the attorney to take. The ability to multi-task is crucial in making sure no corners are cut and all information is obtained. 5. What weaknesses do you have that you will need to work on, and why? - The one weakness I feel I need to work on would be time management. I am good about submitting projects on time, however I tend to dwell or spend too much time on certain things and find myself rushing sometimes. This is not acceptable as a paralegal, as this is leaving a great deal of room for mistakes which can potentially lead to bigger issues. 6. What surprised you the most about the role of a paralegal? - In doing some research behind the history of being a paralegal, most things I read suggested that paralegals were always overlooked in a sense and deemed as receptionists, task runners for the attorney, or case file keepers. Seeing as this is not true and there is quite a high demand for paralegals, especially in corporate and litigation law, I am surprised to read that as of only recently are attorneys recognizing paralegals as a necessary and appreciated part of a legal team. Paralegals are a vital part in a law firm and case acceptance, being they are the ones who gather the “who,
