Someone You Admire Interview Protocol
For this Discussion, you will identify someone whose career you admire and schedule a time to conduct a 30-minute interview to explore his or her career development history. This interview should be semi-structured, which means that you should use the questions below to guide your interview, but feel free to ask any follow-up or additional questions as you see fit. As you are asking questions, remember that the primary purpose of this interview is to learn the details of the person’s career story, including any background and sociocultural factors that may have influenced the person’s career. School counseling students should pay particular attention to development during grades K-12. Ultimately, you want to have enough information to apply the theories you have studied this quarter to the person’s career story and highlight how the theories explain the person’s development in their career thus far. 1.

What are your primary job duties? To help insure schools have a safe learning environment, To be a resource for school administration from a law enforcement prospective.

What is an example of a typical day in your role?
Arrival 15 minutes before start of school, to assess morning traffic patterns for car and bus arrival
Greeting students upon arrival Morning door check, check all perimeter doors to endure they are locking and functioning properly, Camera check to ensure all cameras are working and recording properly Walk Halls during class changes Monitor each grades lunch activities Monitor students car and bus release 4.
What education or training did you have before taking this role? Worked two years as an patrol officer, training consisted of Crime prevention specialist, Basic law enforcement academy training.

How helpful was it in obtaining the role and what type of support did it provide?
The basic law enforcement and training academy was helpful, Provided an stepping stone for
School resource officer training. The CIT training was the most beneficial because I learned crisis management skills 6.
How did you choose your current role? I was trying to expand on my career as a police officer wanting to be more involved with the youth in my community. 7.
Would you choose the same occupation if you were just starting out? If I was just starting out , I would still chose a career in law enforcement because there are many different areas in law enforcement that are of interest to me. 8.

What aspects of your background do you think were most influential in getting you to this point in your career so far? The most influential aspect of my background was growing up in a drug infected community and seeing how drugs and alcohol change family dynamics and lives. Wanting to mitigate and change and help my community to find better alternative to drugs and violence and how police were viewed in my community and how police officers should be seen as resources and not a threat. 10. Have you faced any barriers or challenges due to various aspects of your identity such as your race, gender, or sexual orientation? Yes, I think being black is a gift and a curse. Being that I come from a black family I understand the culture and the people. Being black in uniform is sometimes frowned upon within m community. I take a lot to overcome the stigma
and build trust 11. Have any aspects of your identity given you any kind of privilege in your career? No, I don’t think so
12. What advice do you have for someone just starting out in his or her career? I would say, find a career that you will be passionate about. Something that does not remind you that you are working to provide financial stability. Find a career that fits earlier in life based on what you like explore college and trade schools Participate in career assessments/ explore personal through multiple personality test likes understand your learning styles A description of the person’s background

Highlights of relevant sociocultural factors
For this assignment, I interviewed the school resource officer. The school resource officer identifies as a black heterosexual male in his early 40s. He has been in law enforcement for over nine years. After interviewing the resource officer, I believe his career path would fall under Super's Developmental Self-Concept Theory. "The perceptions and
motivations relative to work within the individual's actions and ability to develop one's career (Harris-Bowlesby & Niles, 2016)" At a young age, he identified areas in his life and community that he liked and didn't like. He entered the work field in his teenage years right after high school. In his mid to early 20s, he had the opportunity to explore several jobs ranging from factory work to eventually landing a job as a loss prevention manager at a local department store. In his late 20s into his 30s, he decided to go to college and take some classes pertaining to studying law enforcement. After completing college and training
in his early 30s, he entered a law enforcement career; now, in his early 40s, he has found a career that is checking all the boxed from personal to professional fulfillment. My interviewee's relevant sociocultural factors were his beliefs and commitment to the black
