Lab 9 Snell’s Law
Objectives
Understand Snell’s Law.
Use Snell’s Law leads to find the index of refraction for water.
Determine the critical angle for water.
Materials
Semi-circular water dish with a protractor imprinted on the bottom
Protractor
Laser (w/ batteries installed)
Paper
Tape
Safety Precautions
In this lab you will be using a 1 mW red laser pointer. Lasers should never be pointed into the eyes of another person. Never look directly into the oncoming beam as this might cause eye damage.
Read the
ENTIRE
warning label on the laser pointer. Copy down - in the beginning of your lab report - the full text of the warning sticker label affixed on the laser pointer. Follow all safety recommendations.
Please remove the batteries after you performed the experiment. Procedure
1. Follow the steps in the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcHDTHK7C5A&ab_channel=ThomasKHemmick
to create the setup for our experiment.
Question 1
: What are the steps of the setup procedure you followed? Please list all the steps.
2. Watch video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nNsSi1eMGg&ab_channel=ThomasKHemmick
and follow the steps for finding the angle of refraction corresponding to each of the four prescribed angles of incidence in Table 9.1. When you measure the angles, make sure the two protractors are correctly aligned, as shown in Figure 9.1
We will use to find the index of refraction of the water based on Snell’s Law,
n
1
sin
1
= n
2
sin
2
.
(1)
In the case of our experiment, medium 1 is water, n
1
= n
and medium 2 is air, n
2 =1. As a
result, the equation expressing Snell’s Law becomes:
n
sin
1
= sin
2
. (2)
3. Using Excel calculate sin
1
and sin
2
and enter these values in the corresponding cells of Table 9.1. The filled in Table 9.1 will be Table LR 9.1
in your lab report.

4. Using Excel represent sin

. Add linear trend line and show the equation on the graph. This will be Figure LR 9.1
in your lab report. Question 2
: What is the value of the index of refraction for water you determined? Enter this value in the cell n
meas
of Table 9.2.

5. The reference value of the index of refraction for water is n
ref
= 1.333. Compare the slope of the trendline, which is the measured value of the index of refraction, to the index of refraction of the water by calculating the corresponding % Error:

Enter this value in the cell titled % Error for n
of Table 9.2. The Filled in Table 9.2 will be Table LR 9.2
in your lab report.
