Police agencies often have set standards for hiring new officers; though many of these
standards have changed recently. What are some of the standards that agencies look at and why are they important to consider for new recruits compared to other types of employers that are hiring new employees? Some of the standards that agencies look at are the physical, education, age and. Criminal records. These requirements are important because they now allow more females and other minorities to join the force. 2)
What attitudes have changed recently when considering a potential recruit’s previous drug use? What had changed is that now they are actually accepting people who used drugs in the past because of the lack of people they had, but still ask about why did they use certain drugs such as marijuana. -
Why is prior drug use an important consideration even though attitudes about it may be changing? It is important because they take into consideration all police policies and how it may affect the performance of the person in the job. 3)
Today’s law enforcement agencies are having trouble finding new police officers to fill their ranks. What are some of the reasons that our police departments are having such difficulty?
Some of the reasons that our police departments are having such difficulty finding new officers is not only because they are looking for the person that has the agency traits but also for the one that they desire. 4)
What are some of the processes that an agency might use to aid in the selection of a new police officer? Some of the processes that an agency might use to aid in the selection of a new police officer is a
written examination, an agility test, polygraph examination, medical examination, background investigation and many more. -
Also, what are some of the characteristics that police agencies are looking for in a new hire?
Some of the characteristic that police agencies are looking for in a new hire are empathy, problem-solving skills, self-control, integrity, and more. 5)
One of the videos refers to the difference between the police mentality of being warriors as opposed to guardians. On page 128 and 129 of your text there is a section
that also discusses this distinction. What is the difference between the police thinking
of themselves as warriors and thinking themselves as guardians? The difference between the police thinking of themselves as warriors and thinking themselves as guardians is that they say they fight like warriors but the good cops that are left they protect their
community like guardians, with skills and while enforcing the law. -
Which do you think is more appropriate and why? Are there times when one is more appropriate than the other?
I think the more appropriate is a guardian, because in the reading is mentioned how the guardian fights within the law which means in my opinion less corruption. For me the one that should always be appropriate is the guardian.
