Forest Lane High School Active Shooter Information
Here at FLHS we are committed to the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students. We want to make sure that all necessary precautions and outreach is done here at the school. This starts with our ensuring that our staff is fully trained, providing counseling services to all students as well as reassuring parents that our school is a safe place.
Active Shooter Drills are going are practiced the first Wednesday of each month. This will allow Both students and staff to know what they are supposed to do and where to go. We will encourage students to take this seriously and work collectively as a team. We will touch base on emphasizing not leaving exterior doors propped open, windows ajar, and identifying suspicions people in the building. . We encourage those who see something to say something to any staff member or admin. Any threat towards the school, student, or staff will be taken seriously. Those caught with weapons or making credible threat will face an immediate suspension and or arrested. Here in our great state of Texas we have witnessed the response time of the the Uvalde School Shooting and The Allen Outlet Mall shooting. In Uvalde, A teacher initially left an exterior door open and when she went to shut it the locking mechanism did not lock. During this a shooter was able to enter and barricade himself into two classrooms. This resulted in the death of many students and teachers. The outrage in this situation was that the police didn’t act
efficiently and could have prevented the deaths of some of the students. This school is set to be torn down. The Shooting at the Allen outlet mall the gunman drove into the mall parking lot and opened fire. Casualties were at a minimum because of an officer on the property acted and responded quickly. Evacuations were done and the mall was closed for a week. Had there not been a quick response there could have been more casualties. Learning from these two tragedies we are in regular contact with our local law enforcement for training opportunities and security changes within our school. The staff also meet once a week to discuss safety concerns and changes the wish to address . The Texas Board of Education has taken steps to require an armed security guard at all schools. With this change the officers are required to take and active shooter class every four years They are required for School Hours and sometimes extracurricular things such as sports and clubs. Our law enforcement agencies also work in part to assist with taking those who decide to terrorize our school to court and seek a conviction. They will provide a deep investigation on why it happened, what can be done differently, and how we learn and move on from it. Another way to ensure security at our school Is daily hourly checks on all doors and access points to the building . As well as CCTV being used with video and sound. All visitors must enter in the front of the building and provide Id and be on the approved list of their student. We also encourage those with orders from court regarding custody, no contact orders, etc. to make sure they are in file at the school and with the local police department.
