Ethics in Criminal Justice Administration Analysis Kiara Wilson CJA/484 Jaime Castro April 27, 2022
Introduction The criminal justice system is responsible for carrying out the law. Any member of the criminal justice system will have daily interactions with other members of the criminal justice system as well as members of the public. During these interactions criminal justice employees are governed by a code of ethics and are expected to always remain professional so they must be cautious of the way they respond to situations. Without having the proper ethical training, the task of making decisions for corrections officers, courtroom personnel and law enforcement officers can be difficult because they will solely rely on their personal ethical values which are different from ethics in the criminal justice system. This paper will cover the role of critical thinking in relation to ethics and professional behavior, a proposal for an ethics training seminar, and five areas of ethical conduct. Role of Critical Thinking in Relation to Ethics and Professional Behavior Critical thinking is an essential part of the job for personnel in the criminal justice system. Criminal justice professionals must think logically when arresting, prosecuting and housing inmates, this process of thinking critically begins when offered a job within the system. “Logical thinking involves listed arguments that are either assumptions, premises or a conclusive statement in support of each other. In the law enforcement agencies and profession, critical thinking is paramount for the experts.” (Souryal & Whithead,2020). The criminal justice professional must think quickly, effectively, and ethically within the scope of the policies of their organization and understand that most decisions that will be made in their profession are made in a split decision. When deciding to become a law enforcement professional and accepting the job officers are held to a code of ethics that must be carefully followed to prevent any misconduct within the organization and the potential of an officer being sanctioned for disorderly behavior. Officers are expected to follow the code of conduct and ethics both on duty and off duty because the actions of an officer on or off the clock can reflect negatively on their agency.
It’s a challenge to remain ethical and professional during the day-to-day functions of law enforcement. Corruption committed by officers has been a trending issue in the media in recent years where officers have not abided by the sworn oath that was taken during their initial job acceptance. Reacting in the best interest of the department. When dealing with crimes such as a drug crime the officer must think of what’s in the best interest of the department, community while also displaying professional behavior being careful not to implement themselves in a negative manner. The Code of Ethics that officers are governed by was adopted in 1957 and stands as a preface to the mission of law enforcement and the commitment to the communities that will be served. All law enforcement units are governed by these ethics and should always think critically and act professionally using the ethics along with their knowledge and expertise. Seminar Proposal To ensure that all law enforcement officers are following the code of ethics and always remaining professional adhering to policies and procedures that will keep themselves, fellow officers, and members of the community safe a proposal is being made for a mandatory ethics training seminar. This seminar will act as way to ensure that all officers are up to date on new laws involving ethics and professional behavior. Effective training programs and ethics seminars will help officer better understand the foundation of their department and the criminal justice system since each encounter is different and worked on a case-by-case basis. The seminar will be attended by all members of the department and each member or employee must participate in the activities in the seminar that will be used a refresher for information presented during the seminar. Teamwork will be a basis of the seminar and senior members of the department will share insight on what has helped them from a ethical, personal and professional standpoint as a way to help future recruits and new employees.
