Job Opportunity Paper: Special Agent Jeanette Martinez Northern Arizona University JUS421C Professor Raymond Lewis February 19, 2023
JOB OPPORTUNITY PAPER 2 Introduction The occupation of my research is based on the Special Agent of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office (AGO). The Special Investigation Section provides investigative support to law enforcement and consumer protection services of the Attorney General’s Office, as well as to law enforcement agencies across the State of Arizona. The Special Investigation Section (SIS) provides expertise in specialized areas of law covered under the Attorney General’s statutory criminal jurisdiction, which is not generally available at other law enforcement agencies (AZAG, 2023). An ideal applicant will have at least five years of investigative experience, which should include working successfully in undercover assignments with minimal supervision; have understanding and working knowledge to conduct fraud, money laundering, racketeering and other white-collar investigations. Special Agent Morin’s Background I conducted my interview on SA Dee Morin, who has been with the Attorney General’s Office for seven years. Before his transition into the AGO’s, Agent Morin had law enforcement experience working in the private sector, but the experience that landed him the job he has today was working security at Nordstrom for thirteen-years. Agent Morin worked his way up the security chain and became the loss prevention regional investigator for the whole State of Arizona. As a regional investigator, he did internal investigation and worked along with law enforcement. All security cases that were investigated went to the Arizona Cooperation Commission, but they were also referred to the Attorney General’s Office for criminal charges. Application and Interview Process Agent Morin did not have a traditional interview since he was referred to the agency and was fast tracked into the AGO’s. Typically, the process for an interview is that your application is reviewed based on your background, work history, and experience. If the Chief and Assistant Chief like what they
JOB OPPORTUNITY PAPER 3 see, you would then receive a call to schedule an interview. During the interview process, you will speak to an oral board that consists of 4-5 individuals which can vary between the Chief of SIS, Assistant Chief of SIS, Supervisor Agent, Lead Agent, and Attorney. The hiring process would usually be between two – six months. Once an individual passes the Oral Board, they will then receive an additional offer. You would then need to complete a Psychological Evaluation and Polygraph. If an individual gets hired on from out of state, they will need to retake the requalification test to be certified with AZPost and complete the Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT). Pay The salary for a Special Agent has changed throughout the years. In 2005, the starting pay for an agent was averaging between $52,000 – $54,000. Two years later, the Governor of Arizona gave a raise to $68,000. It is rare that our office gets a raise. Recently two years ago, there was a 5% raise. As of last year in 2022, there was another raise of 10%. Starting Special Agents now make between $74,000 - $75,000, Lead Special Agents make $82,000, and Supervisor Special Agents make $90,000. Special Agents receive an annual bonus averaging between $1,000 – $5000. Current Issue Like any other law enforcement agency, a big issue for the Special Agents at the AGO’s is the lack of manpower. The Attorney General does not have enough agents for the amount of work that they have. There are no other issue or complaints within the office. There are multiple positions open at the moment. Position will remain on the Arizona State Job website until fill. Common Stresses Associated with the Field and Key to Success Stress is different for every individual. If you are a new agent to the office you will be stress, because you are trying to figure out how to manage a caseload. It takes a while to find a balance and get
