For Field Experience B, the subjects of the interview were Carlton Vivians, Coordinator III at Shadow Rock Center in Dekalb County Schools and Marcel Carter, Assistant Principal at Livingston Elementary School in Covington, GA (Newton County School District). The first thing discussed was
being current on special education issues and policies. All members of the special education department of a school should have a reliable source that provides information of the current policies and issues that involve special education. It is especially important for school administrators to know if there
are any policy or procedural changes that could possibly affect their school’s special education department. In the interview, Ms. Carter spoke on the importance of knowing if any rules or policies have been amended, modified,
or created because the school administration has to implement and make sure that all local, state, and federal laws and policies are being followed in order for them to continue to receive federal funding for their schools.
“Effective school administrators are responsible for creating a school vision that promotes and supports high expectations and success for all students. This includes ensuring that students with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE), a requirement of IDEA. Because the development and implementation of high-quality IEPs are key aspects of this requirement, it is critical that school administrators possess a thorough understanding of the steps in the IEP process, as well as its associated legal requirements. These legal requirements are described in legislation (law) and
