Educational leaders are motivated to pursue leadership positions within the field of education by a variety of factors. Fortunately, I have the support of four principals who are present on campus at Ocean Springs Upper Elementary School. I conducted interviews with three of the principals and their responses to the interview questions were very consistent across the board.
A key aspect of the interview was question one, “What inspired you to become an administrator?” Two of the principals were driven to become administrators because of their deep passion for education and a steadfast commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of students. All three principals view leadership positions as avenues to enact significant improvements and bring about positive change within educational institutions. Conversely, one of the principals initially did not envision herself pursuing a role as a building-level administrator. Instead, her aspiration was focused on curriculum development. Although she found fulfillment in her position at the Central office, she longed to be among students and within the school environment. This longing led her to apply for an assistant principal position. Another key aspect of the interview was the answer to question three. “What training and support
did you receive as a new principal?” Each of the three principals benefited from strong support networks consisting of other administrators and the Central Office. One principal had a distinctive experience: serving as the curriculum coordinator, she extensively collaborated with the other principals and gained insight into the operation of the front office and various aspects of the building. In addition, the response to this question stood out to me. “How do you provide moral direction for the school, and promote ethical and professional behavior among faculty and staff?” PSEL, Standard 2 comes to mind effortlessly. “Act ethically and professionally in personal conduct, relationships with others, decision-making, stewardship of the school’s
