Criminal justice professionals follow guidelines based on court decisions and data trends, then assess results to inform decisions for future programs. How have Supreme Court decisions in recent years affected trends, policies, or court decisions in your state? What do you predict for the future of the Supreme Court? Which research and program evaluation practices can courts use to improve justice and influence public policy in your area? Supreme Court decisions in recent years that have affected trends, policies, and court decisions in Washington state is the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. This decision has created an increase in individuals from other states that have banned abortion to Washington which remains pro-choice and a sanctuary for anyone seeking this care (Santos, M., 2023). Many states that have banned abortion rights have filed investigation requests to Washington police departments to hold these individuals accountable. Our governor has prohibited law enforcement from cooperating with these investigations that go against our state’s protections (Office of Governor Jay Inslee, 2022) as well as filed a constitutional amendment that would provide stronger state-level protections for reproductive freedom (Senate Democrats, n.d.). I predict the future of the Supreme Court to, unfortunately, see much of this same trend as it seems the courts have lost their connection with the public’s sentiment, and many are questioning their confidence in the Supreme Court's integrity and ability to represent the interests of the public (Vogue, A., 2022).
