What is the Purpose of Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional
Performance(PLAAFP) in a Student's IEP:
The primary purpose of the PLAAFP is to
provide a comprehensive and individualized snapshot of the student's current academic and
functional abilities, highlighting their strengths, weaknesses and areas of need "identifying these
areas of needs, academic and nonacademic, so that an appropriate educational program can be
devised" (Yell, 2018 p. 202).The PLAAFP statement will include information about a student's
disability and detail how this disability would impact the student's involvement in the general
education classroom (Yell, 2018). For the preschool age child, the PLAAFP statement will detail
how a student's disability will impact a student's involvement in early childhood education
activities and development (Yell, 2018). The PLAAFP statement is developed with the IEP team
and will explore how a student's disability impacts his or her ability to learn and function as
compared to students without disabilities (Yell, 2018).Indicating the information needed to
develop the PLAAFP will be based on test results and direct observations conducted during the
evaluation for eligibility. The PLAAFP should include information about the student's academics
(i.e.,performance and test scores), health (i.e., mental and physical), development(i.e., social and
emotional) and prevocational and vocational skills where appropriate (Yell,2018).The PLAAFP
also include nonacademic data, for example behavioral problems, communication issues, and
daily living skills. The PLAAFP statement is multifaceted, encompassing academic achievement,
functional performance, and the impact of the student's disability on their participation and
progress in the General Education Curriculum by detailing the student's current abilities and
challenges, the PLAAFP enables educators, parents, and the IEP team to collaboratively identify
areas requiring intervention, accommodations, or modifications. Moreover, it ensures that the
subsequent components of the IEP are tailored to address the unique needs of the student.
