Foundations of Canadian Immigration Law (ICL 810) Skill & Engagement Reflection Part 1: Skill Set Changes and Growth When I think back on this course, I'm amazed at how much my skill set has changed. This is especially true given my early concerns about adjusting to Canadian law, especially when it comes to immigration law. The course illuminated the complex dynamics of immigration by offering a thorough examination of immigration law within the larger social, historical, and philosophical framework of Canada. Specifically in the area of administrative law, one of the most obvious shifts in my skill set has been my comprehension of Canadian legal jargon and the application of case law. It was intimidating to start off with new concepts and terminology. But I've made significant progress thanks to my intense involvement in the legal examination of case studies and my active participation in conversations. Through these exercises, participants gained confidence in their ability to navigate legal discourse in the context of immigration as well as a stronger comprehension of Canadian legal ideas. In addition, I've made great progress in synthesizing legal principles and using strong legal thinking, especially when it comes to legal reasoning and research. Collaborative projects and exercises were essential to this development. These assignments improved my legal thinking skills and developed my analytical abilities. The workshop also stressed how crucial it is to have strong writing and verbal communication abilities when representing clients in the immigration system. Writing projects, legal drafting exercises, and advocacy activities helped me improve my ability to persuasively present legal ideas orally, which is crucial for oral advocacy. 1
Part 2: Skills Requiring Further Development and Growth Plan Even with great advancements, there are still certain abilities that need to be developed further, especially in the areas of refugee protection and international human rights standards. During conversations and group projects, interactions brought these areas of weakness to my attention. Even though I knew the basics, I realized that I still needed to learn more about the ethical ramifications of practicing law as well as the socio-cultural aspects of immigration law. I intend to pursue professional growth in a proactive manner in order to close these disparities. This means looking for extra workshops and training sessions on ethical decision- making in the Canadian legal system and cultural competency. Having meaningful conversations with mentors and peers will open my eyes. In addition, I want to incorporate philosophical and socio historical viewpoints into my legal analyses since I understand how society and the law are intertwined in determining immigration dynamics. I hope to develop into a more sympathetic and culturally aware lawyer who can ethically and compassionately negotiate the complex terrain of Canadian immigration law by placing legal doctrine within larger social settings.
