Part 1 – Landmark Court Cases: Fill out the graphic organizer for each of the Landmark court cases. sd California v. Greenwood Case Summary Court Decisions Landmark Outcome M a j o r L e g a l Q u e s t i o n The landmark outcome of California v. Greenwood established the legal precedent that individuals do not retain a reasonable expectation of privacy in items discarded outside their home. This ruling has had a lasting impact on Fourth Amendment jurisprudence, influencing cases involving searches and seizures of items placed for collection in public areas. The major legal question in this case was whether the Fourth Amendment, protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures, applied to garbage left for collection outside the curtilage of a home. Essentially, the challenge centered on the expectation of privacy in discarded items. In California v. Greenwood, the scenario involved the warrantless search and seizure of garbage bags left outside the home of Billy Greenwood by law enforcement. The police collected evidence from the trash bags, which was later used to obtain a search warrant for Greenwood's residence. The Supreme Court, in a majority decision, ruled in favor of the State of California. The Court held that individuals do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in their discarded trash left outside the curtilage of their home. Therefore, warrantless searches and seizures of such garbage do not violate the Fourth Amendment.
