RUNNING HEAD: Reflect on GST Concepts Reflect on GST Concepts Introduction
The movie Tangled (2010) shows some examples of systems and circular causality. This paper will focus on these attributes while also considering the same situation from a more linear perspective. It will also describe how the situation would look like if I apply the linear causality lens instead. This paper will cover a cybernetics concept and provide an illustration from the movie Tangled. There will also be an example of how this concept could be interpreted in diverse contexts/cultures.
Systems
In the movie Tangled, there are a few examples of system within the movie. For example,
Rapunzel is a princess who was taken from her parents as a baby and a woman named Gothel takes her due to her healing and aging powers in Rapunzel’s hair. This systemic relationship is somewhat forced by Gothel but is Rapunzel’s only understanding until she turns 18. She is locked in a tower because Gothel says she is trying to protect her from the outside world because
it is dangerous. Rapunzel doesn’t understand the outside world, so she trusts Gothel throughout her life while painting and entertaining herself inside the tower. This is a closed system perspective because the information Rapunzel is receiving is false and not open for interaction or
information within the closed environment. Gothel is only using Rapunzel for her healing powers
and tells lies to keep herself safe from getting old or sick. Rapunzel’s systemic relationship with Gothel is threatened when she turns 18 and decides to escape from the tower. She asks for a special type of paint that will take a few days for Gothel to travel and get so she has a way to rebel from Gothel and venture out into the world on her own. She meets a thief named Flynn and
makes an open relationship with him over a stolen crown that is her crown. She bribes him to 2
RUNNING HEAD: Reflect on GST Concepts take her to see the lanterns that the King and Queen (her real parents) do every year to honor her;
she has no idea the crown is hers. They bond and create a systemic relationship of friendship, then eventually love when Gothel tries to kill Flynn and Rapunzel saves him with her tears. Systemically speaking, the movie shows manipulative, open, and closed elements while Rapunzel is interacting with her new environment. The openness helps Rapunzel prosper and change her perspective to adapt to her new surroundings away from the tower. She received a new network from Flynn to start to self-regulate, change with her environment, and learn to leave her isolation of the tower behind. Circular Causality
An example of circular causality in the movie Tangled is when Gothel finds out Rapunzel
has powers in her hair she steals her and locks her away creating a false narrative for Rapunzel, which in turn makes Rapunzel become more curious about why she can’t leave her tower, thus making Gothel push harder to keep her locked away. Even when Rapunzel ventures out to show Gothel that she can handle the outside world Gothel gets angry and ties up Rapunzel in a quest to
capture her again. She will stop at nothing to keep Rapunzel her prisoner and this creates a circular causality of chaos within their systemic relationship because it keeps influencing the original event of her being Gothel’s prisoner. If you look at this same situation from a more linear perspective, then it looks a little different. When Gothel steals Rapunzel from her parents and keeps her as a prisoner for her healing hair powers she is only trying to benefit herself. Therefore, Rapunzel is basically brainwashed but Gothel doesn’t feel as though this is an issue for Rapunzel and it is giving Gothel control and a sense of accomplishment. Gothel doesn’t see her perspective as wrong nor does Rapunzel (until later when she escapes); Gothel sees her perspective of “protecting” Rapunzel as helpful, even though she is not. She sees it as a solution 3
