1.
The policy that I have decided to write about for my final paper is The Gun
Control Act of 1968. The Gun Control Act of 1968 was created following the
assassinations of President John F Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Attorney
General Robert Kennedy. The Gun Control Act was then created in order to impose
restrictions as well as regulations on the firearms industries. This put significant
restrictions on manufacturers of firearms as well as how it was transported to those who
are able to sell or distribute.
Not only is the Gun Control Act being important in regards
to regulations on firearm industries, it was important in defining those who are
prohibiting access to firearms.

2.
The Gun Control Act of 1968 is significant due how people look at the
Constitution and the Second Amendment. Vizzard (1999), takes into account the
leading factors as to why the Gun Control Act was created. There are many structural
issues when looking at the Gun Control Act as we look at how it affects the Second
Amendment. “The Senate presented particular structural problems for gun control
legislation”, (Vizzard, 1999, p. 96). Opposing views are also used as to how the policy is
interpreted. It becomes apparent that the discrepancies on both sides make the policy
difficult on how the federal government’s power can act with state power.

Checks and balances are created in order to maintain the balance of
power between various authorities and laws. Whether it be political parties, federal and
state power, The Gun Control Act is no different. Vizzard (2015) goes over how various
checks and balances on the Gun Control Act were done in order to maintain the Second
Amendment. Various policies and regulations were passed after the Gun Control Act of
1968 whether it was to lessen the restrictions or to redefine the policy. No matter the
side on gun policy, the goal to protect the people is always the agenda.

2.
When looking at how public policy affects gun control, we have to take a
look at who directly is affected. A large reason the gun control movement was created
was due to the large influx of mass shootings and how the media portrayed them.
Philpott (2018) dives into the how the media affects the agenda of gun control as well as
looking at how a large portion of these crimes were committed with those with mental
