Ramsay, J., & Hoffmann, A. (2004). Smoking cessation and relapse prevention among
undergraduate students: A pilot demonstration project.
Journal of American College
Health, 53
(1), 11-18.
Ramsay and Hoffmann examine evaluated peer-led smoking cessation and relapse-
prevention programs. In this experiment, 60 of the 68 students who wanted to quit
smoking did so successfully. Students who quit successfully were placed in a relapse-
prevention program. The relapse-prevention program had a 63.3% success rate. Ramsay
and Hoffmann argued that students should learn appropriate and reasonable life
management skills earlier in life before they can develop habits, which can lead to
lifestyles. Stress was cited as the main reason of why students smoke. Students found the
group environment beneficial because it gave them the sense of community.
Ramsay and Hoffmann both seem to have an understanding of how to conduct an
effective research. They were well aware of the limitations of the research and included
possible factors that could have contributed to their results. Their research was conducted
at one college campus therefore it led to a lack of variety in their participants which
would explain their high success rate. Additionally, there was no control group, therefore,
an evaluation of the prevention activities cannot be contrasted.
Regardless of the limitations in this research, peer facilitators proved to be effective at
this college campus. This study shows the effectiveness of peer facilitators in this school.
This study demonstrates the success in peer facilitators in homogeneous environments.
However, this study cannot be reliable for demonstrating the success in peer facilitators
in heterogeneous environments.

**YOU CAN NOT USE THIS ARTICLE AS ONE OF YOUR TEN SOURCES!**
SUMMARY
: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments?
What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this
article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how
detailed your summary is.
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is
it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the
information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?
REFLECTION:
Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into
your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How
can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
NOTE:
Just like a reference page, you will list your sources in
alphabetical order
