Castle Doctrine and Stand your ground laws are intended to provide protection to
someone who uses deadly force when they or their home is being threatened. “The castle
exception states that if a defendant is in his home, he is not required to retreat prior to
using deadly force in self-defense.” (Ryan, 2014). Stand your ground laws take it one step
further and allow people to use deadly force when they are threatened, not limited to your
home or dwelling.

Self-defense in the Bible is defined in numerous places, but most ironically in Exodus 22:
2-3. “If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no
bloodguilt for him, but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him. He
shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.” These verses are
extremely important because they discuss how you should not feel guilty for punishing the
thieves.

As for saving your own life above helping another the Bible provides Psalm 82:4 as
reference. “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
This shows the importance we must place on helping the weak and needy, but I think that
we should be allowed to defend ourselves.

The Bible clearly defines the line for utilizing self-defense and protecting yourself and
others, while also strongly condemning the idea committing murder. In God’s teachings
we see that murder is always bad because it implies underneath everything that we meant
to cause harm to another human being. On the flip side having to potentially use self-
defense to protect yourself, is seen in God’s word as protecting human life.
