Lucianna Angeli Pahim ANT 2410 Exercise 6: Kinship 12 November 2023 Step 3. After you finish your chart and your map, briefly reflect on the following: 1) Is there any overlap between your diagrams? In other words, are there individuals in both your family and your social network? Yes, there are overlaps in both my social and family networks. This includes my sister and mother primarily because I live with my sister in college and work for my mother part-time. 2) Which of these diagrams is more reflective of the people you interact with most often (your kinship chart or your social network map)? I think my social network map is most reflective of the people I interact with most often. In college, I see my friends nearly everyday and live surrounded by friends rather than my family. Also, most of my family lives in Brazil instead of the United States, so I only see them once a year or once every two years. This distance makes it a lot more difficult for me to be close with and interact much with the rest of my family. 3) Do you consider those in your social network map your family, even if they're not biologically related to you? How do you personally define "family?" I do consider my closest friends as family; in lecture, “family” is described as a group with shared values that offers comfort and belonging to its members. My group of friends that I have essentially grown up with offers that to me. We have all known each other for years and
have been there for each other through several difficult times; some of my friends have brought me more comfort than some of my biological relatives. My definition of family is the group of people that are there for you no matter what or the group of people that love you unconditionally. My friends represent that for me. 4) In what scenarios would each of these methods be most useful to anthropologists? A kinship chart would be useful for anthropologists analyzing clans in which titles are passed down through generations, or even when studying family businesses and organizations. On the other hand, a social network map would be more useful to help describe a community as it shows how each person of the community is connected in a way or another.
