Chapter 15 Questions: 1. How does vocabulary directly contribute to word recognition? What is the role of vocabulary in comprehension? What are potential applications to practice? - As a child’s vocabulary grows, he or she becomes more aware of phonological similarities and discovers that it is more efficient to remember and recognize words in terms of their constituent parts rather than whole entities. - Vocabulary has predictive value for later reading comprehension. The strength of its contribution to skilled reading has been documented over time, and the relationship between early word knowledge and elementary, middle, and secondary-grade level performance has been well established. The growth in vocabulary increases the amount of comprehension a student gains from a text. - A potential application to practice would be phonological reconstructing of words. This is necessary when developing explicit phoneme awareness. 2. . What have you learned about the role of direct (intentional on purpose) instruction? What would you consider most significant in terms of your own practice? - I have learned that the design and delivery of this type of instruction require careful consideration of word choice, principles of vocabulary instruction, and instructional routines as well as activities that provide adequate practice and processing necessary to develop a deeper understanding of word meaning. The components of direct instruction include word choice, principles of vocabulary instruction, instructional routines, and processing and practicing activities. - I would say that the most important term would be the instructional routines because these routines are aligned with evidence-based instructional principles, and scaffold intentional instruction to each word that is chosen. These routines give students an opportunity to get comfortable with a routine that they might remember with the meanings of the words. 3. What have you learned about the role of indirect or incidental on-purpose instruction (intentional on-purpose instruction)? What would you consider most significant in terms of your own practice? - Incidental on-purpose instruction is necessary to ensure vocabulary acquisition for students to participate successfully in academic environments. Some strategies that are a part of incidental instruction are rich oral language classroom environments, structured shared reading and structured independent reading. - I would say that the most significant term would be the rich oral classroom environments because this puts the students in a current environment of positive word learning. The opportunities with this strategy vary a lot once people realize the importance of word-rich surroundings. An intentional focus in this strategy that I believe is important is to focus on elevating teacher talk
and creating opportunities for student talk. 4. What have you learned about the role of independent word-learning strategies? How might you apply this information to your practice? - Independent word-learning strategies are a comprehensive approach that acknowledges that acquiring word meaning independently requires the use of word-learning strategies. A big part of having the tools for independent word- learning strategies is knowing when and how to use them. These tools are dictionaries, context clues, and morphology. Using these tools means that the teacher is maximizing the potential of word learning. - I would apply this information to my practice by knowing when to use certain tools. Not all of these tools will work in any situation. When I want my students to use their context clues to find the meaning of a word I might want them to practice their reading comprehension skills instead of simply looking the word up in a dictionary. 5. What role does word consciousness play in your practice? - Word consciousness plays a big role in my practice. Teachers should try their best to make sure students are interested and aware of all kinds of words. The strategies of wordplay can nurture students’ word consciousness. It is a teacher's job to engage their students in various wordplay activities. This could also help build reading comprehension. 6. How do you assess vocabulary instruction? - Formative assessments are good ways to assess vocabulary instruction. Anything format should work as long as you know that the student knows the definition, context, and semantic network of the words.
