Linguistics ● The study of human language through the examination of how language works given various theoretical perspectives ● Field introduce by Ferdinand de saussure (1857-1913) 3 Axes of Study ● Synchronic /Diachronic ○ A synchronic approach considers a language at a moment in time without taking its history into account ○ A diachronic approach considers how language, has developed and evolved through time. ● Theoretical /Applied ○ A theoretical approach involves the theory of a subject or area of study ○ An applied approach involves the practical application ● Contextual/ Independent ○ The contextual approach involves context - who? What? When? Where? why? how? - pragmatics and the social function of language ■ “Hey, how's it going?” - conversation opener and/or a way to say hello not mainly concerned about “how it's going” ○ An independent approach is a self-directed approach to its autonomy
