Linguistics The study of human language through the examination of how language works given various theoretical perspectives Field introduce by Ferdinand de saussure (1857-1913) 3 Axes of Study Synchronic /Diachronic A synchronic approach considers a language at a moment in time without taking its history into account A diachronic approach considers how language, has developed and evolved through time. Theoretical /Applied A theoretical approach involves the theory of a subject or area of study An applied approach involves the practical application Contextual/ Independent The contextual approach involves context - who? What? When? Where? why? how? - pragmatics and the social function of language “Hey, how's it going?” - conversation opener and/or a way to say hello not mainly concerned about “how it's going” An independent approach is a self-directed approach to its autonomy
