Running Head: Language Development Interview 1 Language Development Interview Shantey Wiltz ECE 315 Language Development in Young Children Instructor Katherine Palichuk November 11, 2017
LD Interview 2 The interview I conducted was with a former coworker who has been teaching young children for over fifteen years. My coworker has dealt with any situation you can think of. She has a passion to teach and get children ready for the world head of them. So I decided she would be a great candidate to interview about language development. Interviewer: Good Afternoon Mrs. B, thank you for agreeing to do this interview with me. I am very fond of you as an educator and would love to receive your outlook on language development. Interviewer: How would you conduct a parent meeting with a language-focused agenda? Interviewee: I would conduct a parent meeting with a language-focused agenda in an environment that is focused on language acquisition with posters, manipulatives, and resources to satisfy any questions that may arise. Interviewer: How would you first approach the meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page with the same goals? I know some parents can come off offensive when talking about their children. Interviewee: My first approach would be to explain the importance of language acquisition and back it up with some scholarly reviewed resources and ways to support. Interviewer: What techniques or strategies do you use to encourage language development? Interviewee: One strategy that I use in my classroom every year is called the 5 words a week, 1 word a day routine. I introduce my students to a new vocabulary word every day that can help expand their language development. Interviewer: That is very interesting! According to Piper, 2012, children at the age of 4 should know up to 2,000 words and children age 5 should know more than 4,000 word and growing to 6,000 by the end of the year. When introducing those words do you focus on them often? Interviewee: I do but not that often. I introduce explain the meaning and how it’s used and then move on but throughout the school year I reflect by using the word. Sometimes my students will let me know Mrs. B you used one of our vocabulary word. Interviewer: What feature of your physical space promote language development? Interviewee: In my physical space I use a letter wall which helps promotes language development and is used on every day bases. Interviewer: What are skills that your class is working to develop in language? Interviewee: Extend and enrich vocabulary and become proficient in speaking and listening.
