ELLs with Exceptionalities

English Language Learners (ELLs) from diverse backgrounds face unique challenges when it
comes to assessment in an educational setting. This paper aims to explore the assessment issues
that affect ELLs, particularly those with exceptionalities, and how this knowledge can be applied
in future classroom instruction or assessment. By seeking out a current research article on the
identification, instruction, and assessment of ELLs with exceptionalities, we can develop a
deeper understanding of best practices for supporting these students.
Assessing the learning progress of ELLs requires sensitivity and consideration of their language
proficiency levels. Standardized assessments can often be biased towards native English
speakers, leading to inaccurate results for ELLs. Additionally, ELLs may have varying linguistic
backgrounds and may require accommodations or modifications to make assessments accessible.
Furthermore, the inclusion of ELLs with exceptionalities adds another layer of complexity to the
assessment process, as their disabilities must also be considered while providing support.
In order to effectively identify and teach ELLs with exceptionalities, it is essential for educators
to have a developed awareness of various disabilities and exceptionalities. One research article
that addresses this topic is "Supporting English Language Learners with Autism Spectrum
Disorder" by Johnson et al. (2019). The article explores strategies and interventions for
supporting ELLs with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The article offers insights into various evidence-based practices, including visual supports, social
stories, and structured teaching approaches, to enhance classroom engagement and promote

language development in ELLs with ASD. Overall, the study advocates for a patient,
individualized, and inclusive approach to meet the unique needs of ELLs with ASD, fostering
their academic growth and social integration.
To incorporate the article's information into classroom instruction or assessment you can use the
information obtained from the aforementioned article can be incorporated into future classroom
instruction or assessment by collaboration and co-teaching, differentiated instruction,
accommodations and modifications, and through culturally responsive teaching.
Collaborating with special education teachers or specialists can enhance the instructional support
offered to ELLs with exceptionalities. Co-teaching models can ensure the provision of targeted
interventions and individualized support.
Tailoring instructional approaches to meet the diverse needs of ELLs with exceptionalities is
crucial. This can involve modifying content, using visual aids, incorporating technology tools, or
providing additional one-on-one support.
Providing necessary accommodations and modifications during assessments is essential for ELLs
with exceptionalities. Such accommodations may include extended time, simplified language,
use of assistive technology, or alternative forms of assessment.
