Note: Incidents of plagiarism will result in you failing the assignment and you will be referred to the office of student conduct Here are two language samples obtained from Abraham at two different ages (28 months and 44 months). Look at the language samples and answer the three following questions. Twenty-eight Months MOTHER: Is that a taco that you’re making? ABRAHAM : Yeah. MOTHER : Where do you eat tacos? ABRAHAM : With a mat. MOTHER : On a placemat? ABRAHAM : (Pours beans into a bowl) Put all in. (The beans start to fall on the floor.) MOTHER : Hey, honey, honey . . . ABRAHAM : Oh no, mommy! MOTHER : Do you want help with the beans? ABRAHAM : It’s a cooking beans! Forty-four Months ABRAHAM : I ate eggs for breakfast. AUTHOR: Did mommy make it? ABRAHAM: I got a gargoyle and I got a Casper today. AUTHOR: What was the gargoyle on? ABRAHAM: They’re just on my underwear. AUTHOR: Oh, you have gargoyle underwear on. ABRAHAM: I have them not on today! AUTHOR: You have Caspers on today? ABRAHAM: Yeah. 1. How has Abraham’s language changed from 28 to 44 months? Provide at least one specific change each for form, content and use. 2. Do you think that his content is typical of other children at 28 months? Why or why not? Provide specific instances related to form, content and use. 3. What evidence can you find that Abraham has not yet reached adult like competence in form, content, and use at 44 months of age? Provide at least one error (along with an example from the speech sample) for form, content and use. HINT: Information found in chapter 7 of the Plante textbook will help you answer these questions 1. A) The patient’s ability to form grammatically correct sentences is severely hindered. When his mother asks where he eats tacos, he responds with “with a mat”. He uses incorrect morphology and syntax. However, once the patient reached forty-four months
CSD 212 he was using the correct morphology for words but still struggled with sentence structure. B) The patient shows signs of a semantics disorder by mistakenly calling a placemat a mat at twenty-eight months. The disorder seems to have improved by forty-four months because he correctly describes that there are gargoyles on his underwear though he still is struggling in forming correct sentence structure. C) The patient does not have evidence of a pragmatic disorder, yes some clarification is needed to be asked by the parent to make clear of his message however his language is not out of turn or breaking any social norms. At forty-eight months clarification is still being prompted by the parent to make sense of what he is trying to say yet it is still all relevant to the conversation and he’s not missing any social cues of any kind. 2. Abraham’s content is following the normal patterns of development for other children at 28 months. Abraham has the ability to answer yes or no questions and hold up a simple/elementary level conversation. Abraham is producing on average 2 morphemes in an utterance which is shows he is developing at a normal pace for a twenty-eight- month-old child. 3. Form: Although Abraham’s vocabulary has increased, he is still severely struggling on a syntax level, for instance he incorrectly says “ I have them not on today” when he is trying to tell his mother that he is not wearing his gargoyle themed underwear that day. Content: Abraham is still struggling with semantics because he repeatedly incorrectly trues to tell his mother what kind of underwear, he is wearing that day when a person with adult like confidence would be able to convey that message in one sentence. Use: Abraham is presenting a difficulty in regard to the pragmatics of language because he is having great difficulty in deciphering how to say the message he wants to get across. He also begins to change topic when his mother asks if she made the eggs he ate for breakfast and he follows up by saying “I got a gargoyle and I got a Casper today- which shows his lack of \a grasp on pragmatics because he is saying this at an awkward time (awkward in the sense it had nothing to do with what was being talked about previously) and he is having a great deal of difficulty in deciding how to say it.
